Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why would anyone do business with a company that has unions?

I certainly wouldn't want to depend on service from a company whose employees think they deserve to have better pay and benefits than normal people do, and who will walk off their jobs because they have to contribute to their healthcare benefits like everyone else does. Heck, these union people get both a 401k AND a pension yet they walk off the job?

I agree that in some high skill professions, union membership can mean quality work. But for most of the Vz union membership, we're not talking about high skill work. If a temp management employee can walk in there and get the ship sailing within a week and smoothly within 2 like in many places in 2011, what does that say about the need for a union for many of the jobs? No, it's all about union fatcats. Power to the high skill union people who benefit the company in a win-win. Not necessary for the others unless it is really about keeping on the low performers and keeping those union dues coming in like everyone suspects.

It is hilarious that some of you union people say that 401ks were invented as "supplements" to pensions. The non-union part of Verizon doesn't get both -- they get one or the other, and in most cases just a 401(k). That right there tells me that the union folks think they are better than the non-union people.

Also, the non-union people have to pay for their healthcare; the unions are being asked to do the same so they walk out. Once again, the company is asking the union to live like the rest of the company does so the union gets mad and walks out.

I can see why the union would like to have the luxuries they are asking for, but it amazes me that these people who are in a dying part of the business think they deserve to have better EVERYTHING than the rest of Verizon. It truly is amazing the gall these people have.

@GTvZHI8-uko let's see, Verizon only trained 10,000 to replace 40,000. And of that 10,000 most have absolutely no idea of what they are doing and most directors resent even being out there. The company is on the ropes snowflake.

@yoq See how long the strike lasts once your benefits stop on April 30. One of your brothers was already arrested this morning in PA harassing a contracter trying to get into the building. Security a lot different this time then the last strike.

I would like to address the original post. The employees do not feel they are better than "normal" people as you so call them. What the employees chose to do is band together to get a better deal. That is how unions got their beginning. The union employees do contribute to their health care. The goal is to limit the increase as much as possible. If a company raises your rates on your car insurance what are you going to do? You are going to shop for a better deal. In this case that is not possible. The employees both union and management are at the companies mercy as to what insurance is offered. In the union's case there are 39K people trying to get a better deal on health insurance. The 401k is supplementary savings plan. When these were established back in the 80's they were never meant to be the end of pensions. Pensions went away because companies took them away and the employees had no way to fight back. The next generation getting ready to retiree will never be able to support themselves on just 401k accounts. This struggle is about people trying to secure their futures.

Maybe the poster should take up the subject with the picket line when he reports for EWA. And then take it up with the state unemployment agency when he gets RIF'd after the strike .... assuming he survives the conversation with the picket line.

Most Union workers are nasty and lazy... Try calling the State or NJMVC and see how helpful they are.

Because they want quality work from people who have a vested interest in the companies success.

Clearly a moron posted this. 401ks were invented as a "supplement" to pensions. The retiree healthcare 'benefit' costs more than $20,000 per year. And if you knew anything about this company at all, managers will end up with less than what the union eventually settles for, or perhaps you have not been in the game long enough to know that.
