Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

If you are planning on crossing the line to work make sure you resign from membership prior to crossing. It might take a day or two but it will let you keep all your earning and stop the union from disciplining you.

I'm telling you know there's going to be a lot of people crossing the picket line the new people that are there do not have the same moral beliefs all stand with the union they will cross because they need to get paid they are millennial's and look up for themselves in themselves only this is going to be the fall of the union

I understand the frustration of working without a contract. I'm on the other side and having the black cloud of the possibility of a strike hanging over me for 9 months is stressful.

My real question is what is a strike going to get the union people? I think it's fairly certain the new contract will NOT be as good as the existing one they are working under now. They will lose a month or two of pay, benefits, etc to eventually sign a contract this is not as good as what they have now. Why not just work under the existing one indefinitely?

I have walked in every strike for the past 35 years and you know how many scabs I have seen come back to the ranks afterwards, and nothing, and I do mean nothing has ever happened to them. The union by law has to protect them, even against other union members. We were always told that there will be no harassment tolerated. I even know of 2 scabs that went on to become stewards. It's all BS.

@GRxiFtI-1osm not always. These folks generally become beknighted because of their bravery, or desperation to surive. The few that do are often moved out of state.

ivfl, and the caveat if some union folks cross the picket line then becoming management is they will be the 1st ones rif'd when this is all over. Seen that many times in previous strikes, they become a "man without a country"

Just like last time, anyone who crosses will have to end up working somewhere else. Once you cross your life really changes forever.

No one will cross the picket line. Might as well go mgmnt after that because you will be done as craft. No one would work with you.

So what you are telling me is that you got sick of bargaining? An ego got hurt? We were all working under a contract that is probably better than the one we will get. So why not continue? Let them lie to you and lie back to them. Draw out the process until Verizon wants to sell us and than the buyer would need to make a deal with us. All those previous strikes were irrelevant(except 2011) because this was a different company and wireless exists. A strike held a lot more importance pre 2000. This is all political with The politicos in NYC now. I hope this is a bluff. Our manager told us he was contacted by employees that plan on scabbing. To his own credit he advised against it. I will not be one of those scabbing. Regardless best of luck to everyone.

aku what an idiot. Cops are also AFL/CIO. You will notice that when you get out there. You will also notice that every single union memeber from every other union will tell us where you are when you are on a pole. That means cops, fire fighters, truck drivers, carpenters, electricians and iron workers. As was already pointed out to you, many of us ARE Vets, while almost none of you are.

@aku/dgo, first of all, please have someone proof read what you write, prior to posting it the first time, so as not to sound so stupid. Secondly, many of our members are Veterans and we strongly support those who serve our country. Please don't assume that because you may be happy with today's economic system, that everyone else should be as well. By the way genius, we're also fighting for the customer. If corporations are allowed to continually take away from its workers and send jobs overseas, who do you think is most affected? Bravo, the customer. You're on the wrong side of the battle today, the 1% are your enemy, not us.

Iah, and the company doesn't care about you.

Keep dreaming. This will be a long one and it is just as likely that there will be no job for you when this is over and the company realizes that your work did not really matter. That is the beauty of a stike. When the company actually finds out how many salary jobs really don't matter to the company. They will also have to lay many of you off to pay for your exesssive overtime, although I think they are going to screw you out of it anyway.

And just like last time, after 2 weeks you'll be back with another sh--ty contract over you. Your union doesn't care about you. Just wait until it's time for them to start writing the big checks to each of you. Follow the money and you'll find the real problem. Union leadership keeps you due paying members as servants.

Strong, active, and intelligent doesn't mean video taping people, spitting on them, nor does it mean calling them random nonsensical expletives.

People being forced in to an EWA aren't the enemy - they're just doing what they have to do to support their families, just like those of you in the union fighting for what you believe is right.

I hope that everything works out fairly and that those who are most qualified to take care of our customers in their BAU Jobs are back to work swiftly, and without incident.
