Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What happened to all the layoffs predicted for employees of closed Retail Stores?

Many predicted Verizon Wireless would close down their brick and mortars due to the millenial surge and the love affair with Fran and his Millenial Candy Crush boxers. Guess everyone is wrong again.

Verizon, as a company, is taking off despite the layoffs and they are retiring with younger, cheaper millenials. They are hitting everything, everywhere to line their pockets, but secure longevity in this saturated industry. They offered up fat packages so people would sign and then Verizon no longer can be liable. They knew people would go quietly and then they can tech up their image and get ahead by hiring the next greatest generation for the low low price. They did it with no press coverage despite huge changes. The shareholders loved the layoffs and I imagine they are loving their dividend payouts too. Through all this, they are #1, more profitable, shareholders are happy and so on. It pisses layed off people bad for the most part, but Title 9 is less effective with an attractive package. Instead, passive aggressives come here and cry and complain.

xsn is spot on in their assessment. Cash is the precious commodity needed to reduce debt. Unfortunately, some people are too committed to this tech-focused reinvention, ignoring the many failures already committed. Acquiring more tech assets is ill advised. Not because it adds more debt (which it does), that's just tossing a marshmallow on the bonfire. No, buying marginally contributory companies that will falter even more due VZ's inability to manage, merge and adapt processes and strategies with these new units dooms everyone.

I totally agree with the comment here about all retail directors being a""holes. Truer words have never been spoken.

I have never met a Verizon Retail Director that is not a self centered, egotistical a--hole. Ridiculously overpaid and as worthless as a one legged man in an asskicking contest.

I suppose you would prefer something real and violent as opposed to people "crying and complaining" on here. Anything other than passive aggressive is career suicide.

You try and sound smart, but clearly you are not. You forgot to mention the $113 billion in debt Lowell and company racked up over the past 3 years. Debt from buying out Vodaphones share, AOL, buying more spectrum, terramark and wasteful, wasteful spending on smart stores, more like dumb stores at over 1 million apiece. And that 1 million is just to get them going. Let's not forget the overhead to run a company owned store. Paying some kid $60,000+ to sling cell phones to the public. Don't forget those overpriced accessories! And let's not forget the wonderful destination stores - $15 million each and staffed with 60 to 70 employees! Really? How are those possibly profitable? Purely created to satisfy certain executives egos.

Let's continue shall we my little ill informed retail employee? When were the majority of Verizon's 1700+ retail stores created? That's right when there was substantial growth. Do we have that today? No, we have very fierce competition that is eating into our 112 million connections. We have MVNO's like Google that sell service without the costly overhead of maintaining a network or operating super expensive brick and mortar retail with super expensive employees that get full benefits.

And if Verizon is so profitable as you say, then why did they sell all their cellular towers to American Tower and lease them back? Why did they sell Basking Ridge and lease it back? Why did they sell wireline operations in the West and South? Why is Fran Shammo, in all his wisdom, proposing selling bonds on future device payments Verizon has not even received? I'll tell you why: because they need CASH! VERIZON CARRIES MORE DEBT THAN ANY OTHER COMPANY IN THE WORLD!

I don't know when stores will close, but do you really think Verizon needs all 1700 plus of them? With slowing or even flattening growth, with a million places to buy a phone and service online, that is not brick and mortar, with debt beyond belief, with over 3 billion per quarter paid in dividends alone - Sure let's keep all the stores forever including their overpaid staff. Yeah right sure...

What else have you got genius? The writing is on the wall. Time to go get a college education and put your big boy pants on.
