Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

New Employee Concerns!

Greetings Anyone,

I just accepted a Wire Technician position with AT&T in the Metro Atlanta area of Georgia starting off at a great salary. However, I am concerned because I keep hearing echos about how bad the turnover ratio is with this company. Do they layoff wire technician often or do these quarterly layoffs happen mostly in other departments?

New bargained employees are the ones that hit the road during a surplus declarations, typically bumped by a peer with higher seniority, taking his place in the his job, makes sense?

If the Wire Technician title is the same as Premise Tech in the Southwest then yes, turnover is stupidly high. I don't know if it is result of hiring people unsuited to the type of work and therefore washout, or if the company's metrics are so unrealistic they are not obtainable on a continual basis. It can be done though, I have met several Prem Techs that have lasted over 7 years, they just know how to play the game. This is a job for a young man, it will wreak havoc if you have a family.

With that said, use the company to your advantage the best you can. There is tuition assistance, actually 100% for certain telecomm related degrees.

As a splicer in the Midwest for 20+ I can tell you that the biggest pr you'll have with keeping your job will be the amount of B.S

You are willing to put up with. As far as surplus with your title I think the turnover rate is higher than the workload. In other words people quit faster than they can rehire and train.

You're a bargained employee, so you're probably safe. It's people with degrees in engineering and computer science they're laying off.

There's a high turnover with craft jobs period. Some become disillusioned some just can't make their numbers. Do your job the way the company wants it done and you'll be fine.

Layoff-wise, you're probably OK for a while. My concern, if I was over there, would be the prospect of them selling off the wireline side (to frontier, maybe) completely. That may actually work out for you better, though - I have no idea what kind of company they are, but can't imagine they're worse than T.

Congratulations about your new employment, unfortunately your job title is not as well protected as other union job titles, I hope you have a good knowledgeable telecom supervisor, that would be your blessing, something going extint in this new environment in which the company would pressure you to achieve their unrealistic objectives, and yes turnover ratio are huge in your title, I have not met any surplus employee in other titles to date willing to accept this position, best luck to you
