Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

In case this gets deleted

February 19, 2016. Dear Brothers and Sisters. We have asked all members to prepare for a strike. As you know, we’ve been bargaining with Verizon and Verizon Wireless since June 22, 2015. During those 8 months, the company has not moved off of its demands – demands which would result in a major deterioration of living standards for our members and retirees. On February 17, the bargaining teams from CWA District 1, CWA District 2-13, and the IBEW met to discuss next steps given the company’s continued refusal to bargain a fair contract. We agreed we absolutely cannot accept the concessions the company is still proposing.

We’re not willing to forfeit our members’ job security, mental well-being, ability to have a family life, and retirement security, and we don’t expect you to either.

In his ‘updates’ Marc Reed has tried to convince members that the company is being reasonable and making a fair offer. This is complete and utter bullshit. Reed says the company’s proposals would help the company in “securing greater workforce flexibility.” What do they mean by “flexibility”? In its most recent proposal of February 4, the company said they would remove their demand to eliminate the job security letter, in exchange for the following “flexibility”:

• Allow over a hundred members to be permanently transferred to new reporting points. In many cases, these members would be permanently transferred to reporting points that are over 75 additional commuting miles.

• Allow temporary transfers (including involuntary forced transfers) to assignments in another state of up to 120 days at any time during a calendar year. Meaning that ANYONE, regardless of title, could be transferred for up to 120 days a year to assignments anywhere in the footprint from Maine to Virginia. When they return home, they could be transferred to ANOTHER out-of-state assignment (as long as it’s a different state than the first transfer) for up to another 120 days. In addition, if there is an emergency the 120 day limit does not apply.

• Allow the company to declare a surplus condition under the Force Adjustment Plan in a title and organization within an Article 8 Unit area. New York County (Manhattan) is one Article 8 unit and Bronx County is another. The company already has the ability to declare a surplus by title in an Article 8 unit twice a year under the existing contract. But under their new proposal, they would be able to declare a surplus by organization (under a specific Director or Vice President).

In addition to changes in transfer language, the Company still has a long list of other major concessions on the table, including:

• Make Sunday a regular workday, meaning you could be assigned a Wednesday-Sunday schedule and eliminate double-time for Sunday.

• Pay overtime after 40 hours worked in a week, not 8 hours worked in a day.

• Cap the pension at 30 years, so that after 30 years members wouldn’t accrue any further pension credit.

• Eliminate the GATT rate for lump sum payout of the pension. This could cut the lump sum payout anywhere from $150,000-$200,000 for a member with 30 years of service.

• Major reductions in medical benefits including higher deductibles, co-pays, premiums and co-insurance.

• Eliminate the Unions’ ability to negotiate retiree medical and prescription drug benefits.

• Reduce accident disability benefits for employees who are hurt at work.

• Limit tuition assistance to courses related to current job or career path internal to Verizon.

• Require employees to sign a disclaimer to receive an IPP/EIPP, in which the employee releases all claims against the company at the time of the signing. In addition, the company’s proposed enhanced EIPP has no improvements to pension band improvements and provides no protection or relief from layoffs, contracting, or transfers.

• Eliminate protection for call center workers and allow more call sharing and contracting out of calls.

At Verizon Wireless, the company has taken the position that Verizon Wireless Technicians should be happy with what they have and grateful to have a job. Verizon Wireless continues to maintain they are "not interested" in any economic improvements for our brothers and sisters at Verizon Wireless.

The company has made clear their intentions, at the bargaining table and at work. They are trying to create a culture of management by intimidation. With the current QAR process, managers are required to sit employees down and question them for hours about their daily activities. Members who are working hard to get customers in service are suffering extreme stress and anxiety as a result of this practice of intimidation and harassment.

The Union demanded that Verizon stop the QARs and told them if they want a new process in the future they have to bargain over the issue. We’re fighting that issue, and the excessive and unjust disciplines the company is doling out.

Verizon made more than $18 billion in profits last year. They have the ability to negotiate a good contract and treat their workers fairly. Instead, they’re insisting on deep concessions. If we don’t fight now to protect our future, they will try to take more from us every time. We have to draw a line.

That’s why we’ve asked all members to prepare for a strike. Make any medical, dental and vision appointments you need now. Stock up on prescriptions. Take your personal items home from work. Follow your Chief Stewards instructions on picket assignments and mobilization activities.

Brothers and Sisters. It is more important now than ever that we stand together in unity and solidarity. I’m very confident that our members will fight to the end and do whatever it takes to make sure we get a fair contract because WE ARE 1101.

In Solidarity,

Keith Purce

President, CWA Local 1101

@2sfz, why would anybody want to hide behind a union?

Who's hiding? We're out front in defending ourselves. Question is, where are you hiding, you shill.

BTW, don't for a second think your linguistic chicanery in using a term like 'hiding' is going to dupe anyone here. After all, were not as easily duped as the tea party.

@2sfz, why would anybody want to hide behind a union? Here's why. Because I've seen literally a hundred good people get let go not because they did anything wrong, but because the executives need the stock price to go up a nickel for the next earnings report, you POS!

Enough with all the shit talk between management and union. I'm not for or against a union - good points and bad HOWEVER I completely support their right to fight. We have lost our pensions, watched good people get RIF'd, losing friends to Frontier and EVERY last one of us would have fought if given the opportunity. I call bullshit on any management person who says they wouldn't. So let them fight and do what they need to do. All of us know what it's like to be a sitting duck , trying to dodge the RIF bullet knowing sooner or later its going to hit us, if they can save their jobs LET THEM!

Good Luck CWA

Long hours of overtime, eating whatever unhealthy food you can get in exactly 1 hour, and no time left for the gym after 12 hour days, 6 day weeks. That is the Verizon way, that is why people are fat and unhealthy. Then they send you an email about how much they care about your health. Yeah right. If you think about it, they probably want us to die.

Skilled workers should stand behind their skills, their education, their training, and their experience. Why would anyone who believes in himself want to hide behind a union where tha laziest slowest workers get the same rewards as the fastest hardest workers? Of course, there are some countries that base their entire economy on this type of thinking. No wonder the cwa wears red.

What took you so long... Ohh....This is a fight we all need to be concerned about. In the next term, your future; the Supreme Court is hearing a case that was tailor-made to decimate the Abood decision and revoke the right of unions to collect dues in public-sector workplaces. The Verizon struggle, if lost by the workers, would have the same effect on private-sector unions..

I love how the union managers keep harping about how Verizon earns $1 billion/month like the executives are sitting on a pile of billions lighting cigars with $100 bills. I guess investments, infrastructure upgrades, acquisitions, and philanthropy don't matter.

I am saying new contractors do not know the plant. I am saying prints and plats are not always correct. I am saying that this division elected to go union to represent them, so they cannot legally be arbitrarily replaced by a non-unionized workforce in a state that is not a Right-to-Slave state. The law is quite clear on this.

1dkl, let me school you youngblood. The competitors antennas on the cell towers and on building rooftops need to be tied in to the landlines, and that's where these workers you're itching to get rid of come in. So, essentially, this "tool" (as you say) ends up being a highly important element in making this all work. Without them, all wireless systems suffer.

If you have no knowledge, go back to the kids table and ssshhhh while the adults are having a discussion. You have nothing to teach us here, either side, and are exposing your ignorance.

Suppose we put you in charge of this new, untrained, contractor division. You'll make a quick success of it, right, Big Boy? No, I believe that you, Mr. Tough Talk, would run away screaming to your mommy.

1dkl, your logic is convoluted and you understand little.

In your world, you would effectively lose all your landline customers in the process, due to extended waiting periods for repair and installations, and your precious cell towers would end up being down for extended periods of time as well whenever repair issues popped up. Our competitors, competitors who are paying and counting on having their landline fiber-delivered service up and running, would not stand idly by waiting for someone to get around to taking care of their issues. Nor would industries that need their lines up to make money. If you ran this company, with your distorted view of the value of a workforce, this company would be over in no time.

You could no more replace an entire seasoned workforce and drop replacements in, and expect it to go humming along without a hitch, than you could throw a bunch of untrained soldiers together and have them stand a chance of successfully taking on the US military. Ain't gonna happen, no way, no how. This is a trained "army" of seasoned pros at the company's disposal. Contractors would bring about the rapid downfall of the company.

Walk out and get locked out. For good this time. VZW has no more need for their biggest tool, the CWA. No contract no raises. Walk out and be instantly replaced by contractors. Win/win for Vz.

I am not landline (I am wireless) but you guys I can say I know what you mean to have the managers bully their employees. I am way too stressed out with a job that I am sure I can do with another company. I wished we had a union at Wireless to be able to stand with each other. I have seen a lot of my co-workers jump ship because of the bullying that Wireless is doing to us employees. You give them your life and you are loyal and all they care about is who they can replace you with a lower salary. Good luck Landline I am encouraged to hear you guys are standing strong!!!!! Wished we had it at Wireless!

Union would be foolish to strike now. Wait until the end of March and the Frontier deal is done. A lot less VZ managers/non union technicians come April 1. Think this is part of propaganda machine. Greasing us up for the contract to come. Heard that deal has already been made.

Maintain work/life balance and quality of life??? There is zero balance and quality now with this contract and union. Ya great, I make a ton of double time blah blah but when do you get to enjoy that money or more importantly, your family? All that money will be great when you're dead at 45 from stress. Glad I got the hell out recently, but good luck to you VZ lifers. Hope things improve.

You're status quo continuing like you are without a contract. Go on strike and I'd bet anything your future contract will not be as good as what you are getting now working without one. Not to mention the months of being out of work with no pay. I know the union wants a fair contract and doesn't want to give up things they have and who could blame them. I just don't know if a strike in this company today would be as impactful as it had been in the past.
