Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Don't bother getting a Masters in CompSci....

I already have one and was surplused. I can program in any language you can name and fought with my manager constantly. She kept insisting we were a data entry team and would kill any automation program anyone would make. Anything the C-level execs say about adapt or else is a lie. They just want to get rid of as much US based workforce as possible.

What if you already have a Masters in Comp Sci or Comp Eng? Do they want you to go to school for your PhD? Are they going to pay for your sabbatical, too? The only way this plan works is if everyone is at the same low level of education. So, I guess they want to fire all their educated workers and just have people with high school diplomas?

Its HR chief believes that's the way to keep up. “People are going to have to work hard" said William Blase, AT&T's senior executive vice president of human resources. “There’s going to be an expectation that your compensation will be tied to continuing to learn.", unfortunately outsourced jobs are abundant for one third salary,. Only at AT&T, either way your job will be gone

OP here. I'm young 30s. I made 20,000/year less than the data entry people on the team and I was the highest paid of the 4 programmers (all of us are out of the company now and doing MUCH better). The data entry people are all late 40s - mid 60s and mostly white. All of them are yes men and women who will do whatever they're told.

I'm in OCATS and we were told last week to expect consolidation and reduction in current staff. It was suggested to be willing to take a job anywhere to keep employed. Asking exactly what that meant we were told by our 3rd level to take a guess.

The reason why they did not want to consider you is because you were too smart for the to handle and you make much more money then they want to pay and most likely you are not a minority and older than a recent college graduate. All they want are young yes man/women who will be told what to do. ATO will hopefully be gone soon and AT&T will be history.

I'm OP. I was in ATO. Other departments refused to consider me even though they were using my software to automate projects. It was kinda insulting.
