Hey cnn and icd, the day you're facing a layoff, I suspect your eyes will finally be opened and you'll be regretting the fact that you were so ignorant regarding the benefits of being unionized, that you looked down your nose at us, and advocated for our downfall.

You see, if you were Union and were facing the prospect of being laid off, it would be fought tooth and nail. Further, in a union environment, were a company successful in initiating a layoff, there would be zero arbitrariness to it that would leave one wondering why they were targeted. However the system, without a union, is very subjective - they don't like you, you're out. You don't brown nose - your out. You're older - you're out. You're paid too much, or have too much vacation - you're out. You slipped up once, after years of good reviews, you're out.

It's a fundamentally unfair system as opposed to the last in, first out one adhered to by unions. There are no games of playing favorites. Being the bosses lapdog and sucking up doesn't increase your longevity. You don't get pushed out because you're a stand up guy/gal, or you make too much. You put in your time, you have your advocate during the journey and, when you're ready to leave and your pension seems reasonable, you leave of your own accord.

Would you go to court without a lawyer? Why go to work without one? Corporations have their's.

It's human nature to band together for mutual benefit. That's why towns and cities form. For mutual exponential gain. That's why nations form. That's why alliances form. That's why monopolies form. It's mirrored throughout the animal kingdom as well, because the simple concept of banding together gives individuals far more benefit than sticking it out alone ever could. It tilts the scale more in your favor, especially when the other side who can oppress you has far deeper pockets and political pull.

Only a masochist wishes harm upon oneself. Don't ever go it alone, if given the choice. Why do you think there's such adamant opposition from companies at the first rumor of a union-forming drive? Think about it.

That's an idiotic acronym. Behalf ? It's got no ring to it. Befalling, maybe, but not behalf.

cnn, in my opinion, you're quite misguided, and you're being totally hoodwinked by your handlers lies (or, more likely, you're a handler yourself, a troll, here to attempt the creation of a fake wall between different factions of the have nots - management/non-managemment).

Unions are necessary. Humans have always been social animals, and for good reason.

Without collaboration, there is no survival.

It was not possible for our forebears to defeat a Woolley Mammoth, build a secure structure, or care for children while hunting, without banding together for the mutual gain that only a team effort could offer.

It’s truer now more than then before.

Corporate America is our modern-day 'Woolley Mammoth', a giant that can only be dealt with when we band together for strength and mutual gain, in order to offer ourselves some meager ability to go toe-to-toe with those who delight in seeing our downfall for their own personal gain.

Do you not think that corporate giants of America, of the world, band together? Have you forgotten your own history here in this country, when a begrudging alliance was formed between the likes of Carnegie, Morgan, and Rockefeller, natural business enemies who saw it in their best interest to band together in order keep the masses down for their own self interests and selfish gain?

cnn, take pause and consider us have-nots who are facing such phenomenally-funded adversaries, those of us who are bravely fighting back against those who are dead set on forcing our demise in order to further enrich themselves, those of us who are suffering because the greedy for some unknown reason see the need to continue taking from us to add to their personal gain.

Our reliance on each other grows as societies became more complex, interconnected, and specialized. There's a greater need for unions now than theirs been in a long time but people such as yourself believe that your masters will treat you with a gentle hand. They will not. Look what's happening all around you now in America. Be honest with yourself. Take your blinders off, and take a realistic look at the middle class landscape - and then tell me nothing's wrong, and that the field's level.

Connection is a prerequisite for survival, physically and emotionally.

"35,000 members, virtually 100% of the landline "workforce" is union"

Do you realize how fast things are being cut to VOIP? Major markets within 7 yrs, smaller 7-12. Then it's over, for a lot of people.

I am a sales rep and my rise this year was a f---ing joke and people wonder why we decide to unionize. A company that makes 1.5 billion a month in profits only gives me a 600 dollar a year raise #standuptoverizon

Icd. What does that mean ? the raises are fantastic considering the state of our messed up nation. What does the nation have to do with the fact verizon made 1.5billion dollars a month for the last year or so. Why consider the nation verizon is making billions. Dont you feel like you deserve a f!#;^ng raise !!!!!!!

35,000 members, virtually 100% of the landline "workforce" is union, yet we are afraid to strike. Sounds to me like someone is in Lowell's back pocket.

God Bless the Union. You do realize that before you even sit down at your desk, or even before you leave the garage, in the first 45 minutes of your work week...you have earned your Union dues for the entire week! This is a Layoff board where we have seen thousands of workers unjustly thrown off this job, for pure greed. Their jobs sent over sea's, for pure greed. There benefits and retirement striped, for pure greed. 30 year careers stripped for pure greed. Those workers hadn't a chance against Verizon, They went home to tell their families there would be no more income, and for what? pure greed. While the top executives give themselves raises ,It's the worker that does the job, that pays for those raises. Pure greed. Well this pure greedy company wants more jobs, and wants you gone. But what there up against is 39,000 Union workers who are fighting back against pure greed. 39,000 who Built, maintain, install, repair, and sell the products that the executives have becomes multi millionaires on. Without our Union you would have been long gone by now just for pure greed. I'll say it again, God Bless the Union.

YES!!! we would be so much better off without a Union...Lets do it!!.. I'm sick of earning over $100.000 dollars on my education. I could be earn so much more if i wasn't in this Union. Lowell McAdam would take care of us, I'm sure he would. He would give us double time on Saturdays, not just Sundays. He would give us Groundhogs day off. Not just Election day. and, if we wanted to work those holidays, pay us triple time, not just lousy Double time and half, to work on Election day. All those trips paid to the doctors for myself and my children, That was Lowell's idea's NOT the Unions, Verizon Managers are most competent people in the industry, and i'm sure they would treat us fairly. No limits on forced overtime. plenty of breaks and lunches...Yeah.....I don't know about you, but i just can't get enough of that QARs Everything we bitch about the company would just go away magically, The company really does care about me and my family. The company would treat me fairly if we didn't have a Union. It's the Union that is unfair and trying to take money out of my pocket with there Union dues, those scoundrels. Lets tell Lowell were on his side, and not the Unions. I'm sure that would put a smile on his face, and he'll treat us even better. Down with the Union, I could do so much better on my own with Verizon.

I keep seeing in these posts, people warning that the contract we have is better than what we will get. If this is true, then we have already lost. If each new contract is always worse than the last, then settling as we usually do, may not be the right way anymore.
