Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

AT&T continues closing centers and laying off long-time dedicated workers, while jobs are continuously opened and available to the public.

In my opinion, this is clearly age discrimination! In the past, Pac Bell would freeze any and all positions when a surplus condition existed and provide opportunity for all affected employees to compete for these jobs. Today's AT&T, intentionally announce layoffs or close large call centers, consolidate, etc.... and offer absolutely no job placement assistance to their dedicated, experienced and loyal employees. Shame on them.

We are from another team in IT where we were also replaced by Contractors offshore and also from contractors from India. BUT we are planning on complaining to the DOJ. We need more and more people to come forward. SERIOUSLY we need more people to do a class action suit. Would you guys be willing to join us all in filing a complaint. It can be anonymous, since it is a group action. We will be going thro a team which has lawyers (who are patriotic and would like to keep jobs onshore with Americans not some greedy lawyers looking to get a cut) and also the group has powerful political connections. This is a win win situation for the worker. Only thing is the affected people need to come forward. Just posting on blogs and venting frustration will not help. But a judgement in these kinds of cases help not only yourself, but your colleagues in other companies. A judgement given helps all the workers in the different companies. Would any of you be interested in coming forward and joining us who are trying to fight the injustice. If yes I will post some contact and organisations that can help you guys. IF we don't stop this. This devastation can continue further. We seem to be going the same way manufacturing jobs went. We cannot find anything made in USA these days.

SHALL WE STAND UP FOR OURSELVES AND FIGHT

I was laid off a year ago. I applied for many jobs that I was qualified for (had all qualifications they were looking for and years of experience in that type role). I did not get one interview. Tell me a person on the street would be more qualified than a current veteran employee.

I was also part of a department consolidation /layoff where the majority of us were long time employees in a very busy department where overtime was unlimited because of the volume of our workload.

As a previous poster mentioned, about Pacific Bell and the policies and procedures were to freeze jobs immediately when a surplus condition existed, and most certainly not hiring outside, off the street employees while laying off long-time dedicated employees. The company and integrity have truly taken a nose dive since SBC Management took over in the late 90's.

Supply chain shouldn't have forced the Indian contracts on everyone else. They set those company's up to replace everyone.

Couldn't agree more. Corporate culture is toxic. It's all about CYA instead of actually solving a problem. Morale is at an all time low. The endless escalations do nothing to fix the problem but only cause more stress. It's going to come back to bite AT&T, most of my fellow co-workers don't care anymore. I'm sure it's the same in most departments. Can't wait for the eNPS if I'm still around. I'm sure they will figure out a way to sugar-coat the results too.

I concur. In the past there would be a hiring freeze and the contractors would be the first to go. Now they fire employees and replace them with inexperienced contractors!!! They fired all the buyers in Supply Chain. Everyone was over 40. Those buying positions were transferred to contractors in India, and the contractor headcount increased!!! This is really crass decision making considering the loyalty of long time, experienced employees. Those employees also had to deal with contingency training every two years in case of a union strike. AT&T has really shat the bed, and the corporate culture is really toxic now.
