I have been with the company for six years now and I was shocked when I heard about the layoffs. I was not totally surprised though considering the state of the industry and with so many thousands in senior or leadership positions that were not bringing in revenue. I just figured that the company was profitable to continue with business as usual. I was even applying for corporate jobs but now I'm glad I didn't get one. It is a tough company to work for but the benefits are great. However, working in retail is very difficult and it has aged me faster than if I had worked elsewhere. Verizon paid for my schooling, I hope they keep that benefit for current employees but that may disappear as well with all of the cuts. If they do close retail stores would it be smaller ones with less traffic? And would they take the performers from those stores and put them in the busy stores? I can see myself being replaced by a younger, more energetic sales star and out of a job, The customers really like me but I doubt if that is enough anymore.

Customers like you? Ha ha ha. Sorry, don't mean to be rude, but, respectfully and seriously, you cannot gamble your job on joe/jane public's liking you. And I promise you, promise you, customers liking you won't keep you in your job at vz for one second longer after vz determines your services are no longer required. You sound like a very sincere person, probably ideally suited to interfacing with the public, but when the vz corporate death dealers arrive at your location they will put a bullet in your head and be headed to lunch before your body has hit the ground. You are nothing to this greedy greedy company, NOTHING
Customers liked me too. Still gone. Doesn't matter you are a number.
The customers like you? But Verizon execs don't care about customers ... or employees. They only care about the stockholders .... aka themselves (since execs get most of their bonuses in stock). And they screw the customers and the employees and as sham to try to keep the stock prices up. And when they start falling (and they are), they will bail with as much $$$ as they can take with them.
your hunch is right on target. you are in a position of more influence dealing directly with the customer; just keep that attitude and groundedness about your self - that will take you to higher places elsewhere....don't depend on corporate, they usually just want to collect your insights and take credit for it - do what you can to take advantage of everything you can learn and everything they offer - the name will get you further - on the outside (not on the inside) corporate values corporate (not retail)
