Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Should I worry?

Should I worry tomorrow when I go into the office? Everyday now has become a paranoid work week just waiting for the tap on my shoulder. Also my office is now empty due to all the great people that were letgo.

RIFs are usually quarterly, so keep a RIF box under your desk so you can get out of dodge without embarrassment i.e packing box in front of co-workers/strangers.

Just look busy and keep your mouth shut, it works for management

Tired of hearing how being union would prevent all this. Vz is dedicated to removing the unions and will succeed. The unions no longer have teeth to force management to negotiate. It is not like the old days where new service required a splicer, IR and Frame tech to establish. If the union was the answer, they would have a bright new ratified contract signed. Who would suffer more with a strike? Not the company now a days. Any old timers can attest to how the operators were treated and how may of those are left being represented by the union today? None! Company got rid of the whole group! I am not anti union, just realize that they no longer have any threat for the company.

Yes union people are forever untouchable. That's why the union people have a great new contract...At the end of the day, even the super duper CWA can't save this train wreck.

No, not union. Not management. I thought I was safe - not too far removed from the customer in sales support role.

Were you union? I have to assume you were not (or you would still be gainfully employed).

I was impacted in Oct. I wanted to stay with the company. I had 7 interviews and an offer I had to decline. :( People do stay and even relocate. My advice is direct that energy into preparing..... resume, cover letter, Linkedin, apply for internal jobs asap - get the ball rolling. You can always refuse, this is also good prep for interviewing externally if you need to. Shadow, be visible, start networking. Organize your references in case you need them. collect any documentation you may need to refer to later, sign up for internal classes to enhance your marketability. Doing something will make you feel better and in control. Good luck. Back to job search for me...........

Should I worry tomorrow when I go into the office?

That would depend on how you answer this next question.

Are you union?
