Overlap? Jobs are staying, but they are being transferred to contractors!

If AT&T buys another company, like with Directv, you can't expect they are not going to cut employees to consolidate the overlapping departments. You can complain about the nature of the work and the benefits like unionized or contracted, and jobs sent overseas, but you can't expect there to be no workforce reduction. Do you expect them to keep employees they don't need?
What is the statement based on?
