Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

#ItsJustAPaycheck!

The heart and morale of many employees has been lost. I've never heard references of "it's just a paycheck" like I hear now. Senior leaders can be in denial and keep their head in the sand, but the culture has shifted -- and it's not good. All of these layoffs have been demoralizing to the workforce. Employees use to be so proud and would work so hard. Now they've realized that they can be easily laid off, shown the door at a moments notice - lives shattered, careers lost - all because a few suits have made terrible financial decisions. It's just not the same anymore - the reality check is real. No heart, just numbers - it's numbing, but the it's the VZ way now!! #ItsJustAPaycheck!!

OP are you kidding? I am sure Lowmac, Shamwow and all the other executive cronies are celebrating right now. The stock is at $50 a share! It's miller time! That alone will only encourage them to cut more. And God forbid the stocks drops again, which it will. They will have another bloodbath. They could care less about the thousands they have impacted to make the stock rise $13

The only thing that will hurt them is if they start losing subscribers. I did my part and cancelled Verizon along with my families and close friends. And you know what? T Mobile isn't that bad, I don't see the difference really. All that bs about best network is just hot air.

After 35 years I was out STD for an operation and the first day released back to work was lied to to go in for a meeting about coverage. Walking in to the office I noticed my manager and coworkers talking and went by the office of what I thought was a friend, but now know is just another vz director, he looked down and away and the first time he did't greet me. Well, I then noticed my director in the empty office and I went into the conference room and tried to catch up on emails from being out on STD. My manager came in and asked me to come with him onto the director and closed the door. I was so shocked by him telling me my job had been eliminated and shown a paper with severance and all the HR/EAP info. The statement of "its just a job" comes from those trying to comfort themselves that what they are part of is all normal business and required. The company targeted those top earners and used the younger expendable to prevent the charge of age discrimination. I had another manager want to pick me up on his team and they were told "NO, he is way to expensive" by the director who gave me my walking papers. This director had such a smerk and cocky attitude that it still sticks with me. I have been gone from November 1 and not a single day has gone by without waking up with all this in my mind. I wish I could take the "Its just a job" attitude to heart, however, I fell for the vz management telling us we are a team and a family. Disenchanted is a gross understatement. I subscribe to the idea that Karma will someday even the score, but, this only helps me justify being so targeted and treated worse than I have ever allowed anyone to treat me in my life. The new way of looking at vz should be that they will use you and dispose when they want with no concern or feeling, all the while reminding you that this is just a job and don't take it personal. 35 years building this company and with the sort of a spreadsheet it is all gone. Everyone hang in there and understand that verizon is nothing more than an internet provider and the directors and up will all be hitting the bricks. I am sure they will have some big severance that will amaze the public. Sickening!

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/wired-success/201601/the-rise-toxic-leadership-and-toxic-workplaces

Toxic workplaces can be characterized as follows:

All sticks and no carrots. Management focuses solely on what employees are doing wrong or correcting problems, and rarely give positive feedback for what is going right. Or mostly carrots for the best performers, sticks for the the rest;

The creeping bureaucracy. There are too many levels of approval and management to get things done and a singular focus on micromanaging employees;

The gigantic bottom line. A singular focus on profits, beating the competition and cost cutting without consideration of other bottom lines;

Bullies rule the roost. Bullying of employees by management, or tolerated by management when it occurs among employees;

Losing the human touch. People are considered to be objects or expenses rather than assets, and there is little concern for their happiness and/or well-being;

High levels of stress, turnover, absenteeism and burnout;

Instituting internal competition among employees enforced by a performance assessment system that focuses on individual performance rather than team performance;

Little or no concern for work-life balance, where a personal or family life must be sacrificed for the job;

Overwork or workaholism, commonly evidenced by 50 hr+ workweeks, little or no vacation time and 24/7 availability for work communication;

Little evidence of leaders’ compassion and empathy for employees;

Little or no commitment to making contributions to the community, worthy causes or making the world a better place.

When the employees are treated like a commodity, what kind of culture do you expect?

Why do you think the top brass had I.T. block this web site, among others. They don't want us talking and colluding. Even though that's all they do.

I get a child like grin on my face when I walk the halls and hear disgruntled employees with 15-20 years mumbling "f--k this place" under their breath.

The baby at the top who holds the CEO title has aligned himself with people that only do as they are told. They do not want feedback. It angers them that those underneath them are not 100% compliant in doing as they are told. Why? Because they do not want to run the business. Who knows what they want. Mass profits at any cost.

They are in bed with the government, the laws allow them to go abroad and replace us with foreign workers and off shoring technology. Part of this is that they want to "show you" that you are nothing and that you are expendable.

And they are right.

To that end, we all see this as "just a paycheck." And I doubt that will change, verizon is not the only one playing this game.

The USA has seen it's hayday come and go. God help our children.

And the reality is, it's one paycheck to many for this leadership. The only paycheck they have, with their blinders on, and in deep focus is theirs, If they could, we would all be replaced by cheaper or even automated. The only focus our leadership has, is for their well being, and their families, not yours. I guess the only thing we can do now is to keep our heads down, don't standout, don't do anything, negative, or for that matter positive that would attract attention, become invisible, try not to even be noticed, and for now, collect that pay check.
