Compete with Google send Amazon???

They cannot even run a quality wireless network.

A PRIDE flag should have been placed on the wall above the scooter.

Not embracing diversity Randy! That is how SFO rolls.....

I agree that the training is pointless. Over 1/2 of the topics assigned to my role are garbage, I too am an overworked "Exceeds" employee that has to go above and beyond to meet project deliverables. I kick ass at what I do, I'm considered the go-to guy for complex technical problem resolution. Upper management is so disconnected from reality that they have no idea what people do in their current role or what they need right now to help improve the workplace so how the hell can they think they've got 2020 figured out? 280k people need to learn how to code? It's all smoke and mirrors. They get to say "We gave our people every opportunity to get trained for the job" and cut us all out anyway. Then they will H1B the positions overseas. It's not about getting us 2020 trained, its about them saving huge dollars in 2020 by cutting payroll. Period.

People in the trenches where I work are worrying themselves sick about this WF2020. Me....I couldn't care less anymore.....one trains and strives to exceed and ultimately what you get is managers micromanaging and looking for reasons to "get you"......infighting because people think that is what will save their job....stress because many are nearing retirement......countless sleepless nights learning new skills which aren't appreciated or recognized by management and for for what....I've been with this company over 20 years and have seen it become a telecom sweatshop....I'm ready to take the "golden handshake".....

Management is not clueless and is only trying to save their jobs. They hope the work will last long enough to get them a job in another department. Guess what, they are on the list also but like a lot of people they think it will be the other guy. I wont identify my department but we all have degrees in IT and other supposed new requirements and were told this month will be our last.

We still have some who think it was a joke and not really going to happen.

AT&T doesn't want qualified programmers, either. I worked on an ATO team with 4 top notch programmers, 3 who had advanced degrees in computer science and engineering. We all had multiple certifications from Cisco and Microsoft to Oracle. We were all surplused or put in positions of dead end data entry jobs and told there was no way we were getting out of them. 2 of us quit and 2 were surplused. It's all a lie.

At the end of the day they are gonna lay off whomever they want whenever they want. They are going to look at how much you make and how close you are to retirement. This article communicating either "Train or Move On" means nothing. I had 17 (20) years of "Exceed Performance Reviews" AND did ALL of the Workforce 2020 training recommended under my job role plus a big load of other enhanced WF2020 courses and it did not matter. I spent hundreds of hours of my own time working on this in 2015 as I knew layoffs were coming and all I heard was if you wanna keep your job you better train. That's exactly what I Did and it was pointless. I was part of the Surplus and my management had no input or say in the matter.

20 years of hard work...gone. No one fighting for you. No one really cares. ATT has turned into sad company that no longer wants employees to have a work/life balance. I mean in the Times Article they use a 24 year old as an example highlighting that she works until 7 PM everynight. Goes home until midnight and does homework and then dedicates her weekends to ATT course work. Really ATT that's the expectation of a good worker? How about the 20 year employee that has found ways to save $100,000's of dollars over their years of work, juggles a family, volunteers at local schools, gives back to community while making donations and offering assistance to churches and to those in need. Seriously, they might as well go to building robots and program what they need because there is no human interaction any longer.

It doesn't sound like Randall's brother has taken much of the WF2020 training, I wonder if he will ever be part of the Surplus???

I have no idea how AT&T is going to reach their goals without AT&T employees. The outsourcer companies, like TechM, are supplying very green people who need to go through extensive training. The managers that are in charge are only there because there were no one else due to all the layoffs. They are completely clueless. Ask them any technological or business question, they state they are too high level to answer it. I heard one manager say that it is our job to train them. Really how is it our job. I do not ask them to train me. If you are not able to do your job, get the hell out or spend time learning like we all did. But, if you are a senior technical director, there are things that you are expected to know.

This is a damn good (long) article and it's interesting to hear the disagreements between Randall and his brother. It addresses some of the concerns employees have about performing a "skill pivot" and having a future with the company. A lot of valid points were made in this article one that stuck with me was that our physical network is not nearly ready for what Randall wants to see accomplished.

Per the article it is estimated that the company has accomplished only five percent of its goal by the end of last year. It further states that senior company management feel that they can get by with a third less of the current workforce. And the warning shot....Stephenson quoted as saying demography is on their side which I interpret that he is looking at the older workforce in the company No matter what the company says they are making it clear that more jobs and people will be gone in the next four years I'm a certified Ccna and even that no longer means anything in the company

Is hard to believe that this concept is coming from management, my current supervisor's cluelessness is beyond reason, like many others in ATO, is very hard to Work For An Idiot supervisor. Technology is not their strength for sure, yet they exist only to stomp the life out of their intellectually superior and more innovative subordinates. I have seen some great ideas rejected and coworker's work denigrated.
