Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Stephenson says that people should spend 5 hours a week learning or they will be obsolete

I wonder if Stephenson follows his own advise?

He says that training will be tied to your performance review and people who do not take training will not be fired on the spot but they will be placed on notice. This is in an attempt to keep up with Amazon and Google which is putting pressure on AT&T.

I have the same degrees and our department was told to be free for a call on the 22nd of Feb. Miss the call and you will be automatically placed on the layoff list. some asked the director , what layoff list? we were told a few weeks ago the group was safe. what changed? Seems like it was all bull and now another excuse has to be used because we have the qualifications and can do the work.

I have an advanced computer science and an engineering degree. I can program SQL, OOP, webpages, scripts, everything. I was surplused last year. AT&T doesn't care of you can do the work.

AT&T talks a good game, but at the end of the day they do not care whether you completed training or not. AT&T will still let you go and keep the idiots around. AT&T changed a lot over the years and I would say to the worse. Recently, we received ethics training with a video where Stephenson was talking about importance of ethics and how important it is to treat employees ethically. I wonder if he follows his own advice. The leadership from the top to STD level is terrible. Most of the managers I know could not get through the technical leader training which is utterly useless in its own right. If a technical director does not posses the skills that are outlined in these training he/she should not even be here in my humble opinion.

We were given that direction several years ago. I took required training, received certifications plus when above and beyond taking extra training. All on my own time because Lord knows you don't have any extra time during the day with the heavy workload. I was surplussed. When they are through with you you're gone. Just their way of spinning it to make you tthink it was your fault you were let go.

Forget AT&T training, no relevant if you are looking else where for job opportunities, If you can't hold a CCNA certification at a minimum , you have no business in Today's Technology market, the CCNP certification is a must , even without any experience, IF you want a degree , I would look at online schools like WGU or UMUC - not ITT. I do not know too many folks that think highly of ITT Tech, nor do most people care if you have a degree.Of course this advice assumes you are in the US - I cannot speak authoritatively on how degrees hold weight in job considerations overseas, I can simply pass on what I've heard and been told.

Certifications will certainly help you gain more specific skills which will largely help far more in breaking into the industry or getting a promotion than any degree which for the most part does not address specific skillsets.

In the end, both are best, but it is your call which come first, unfortunately most high end jobs are going overseas

The only thing obsolete at ATT is the leadership.

I was in a capabilities evolution class. We were told that training is being actively monitored. We were told that at certain predetermined times training progress would be measured against where they felt folks should be. If they didn't see the progress being made they would assume that meant you didn't want to be there and they would make that happen for you.
