So what happens when companies run out of countries to go to for the lowest wage? Robots aren't cheap, and someone has to write the software. Eventually, a reset will happen and those who led us down this road won't be forgotten.
iws, I refute your belief. When arbitrage is diminishing in low paying countries, it's usually because the people in those countries are starting to demand a higher wage. Corporations then move to a new country, in order to regain the opportunity to pay low wages. That new country's population, eventually, demands higher wages as their predecessors did, and the whole operation moves on to another area where arbitrage is still in play. This plays out time and again. However, no country that I've seen has chosen to go backwards wage-wise in order to regain the opportunity to reclaim lost work by once again laboring for peanuts. It just does not happen, and hopefully will not be allowed to.

iws you are wrong...we aren't giving our jobs away as you make it seem...these jobs are being taken from us by the almighty corporation that now runs this country...if you suggest we take $5 an hour to get these jobs back...baloney...when a corporation profits $1.5B a month and pays its ceo $18M a year it should be mandatory that it pay its employees comparable wages...we are not slaves, our efforts created that $1.5B per month profit that the ceo dips his beak in...you and the other lemmings need to wake up and take this to washington d.c.
cj1 I refute your belief that we "should (be entitled) have a decent job?" Whatever our individual beliefs, here are facts:
1) The US never stopped the Japanese, who have relentlessly taken over, world wide auto manufacturing, despite years so called agreements on limiting imports. 2) This country is failing to stop China taking all low tech manufacturing, because companies like Apple, are clammering to find ways to reduce high labor costs here in the US. 3) High tech jobs ARE, and will continue, to flow to India for one, and only one REAL reason, the unacceptable high cost of skilled labor in the US. Many will say that both the Chinese and Indians offer poor quality compared to the US, and that is true, for now.
Remember VOIP? Old POTS line people scoffed at such a crappy little technology being able to mount a threat to a REAL phone line. Today the tail wags the dog and crappy little VOIP is the big dog. Remember blu-ray? No way will streaming video EVER be able to challenge blu-Ray. Try telling that to a video store owner, if you can find one still in business? The Chinese WONT take all low tech manufacturing, greedy American corporations will GIVE it to them. The Indians WONT take all high tech IT development and engineering, vz and other US corporations are GIVING the work to them. VOIP was crap, now it's King. Streaming video was stuttering, now it stands supreme. Today we can't understand a damn word the Indians say, tomorrow it will be us learning Punjabi, and grateful for a 16 hour day, with creature comforts consisting of a cold cup of coffee, and a pi$$ in a bucket. It's coming and much sooner than we think. We must, MUST, stop thinking we are ENTITLED to a well paying job and COMPETE, or soon enough our children will be taking classes in Punjabi. WAKE UP AMERICA?

ois is correct as far as I'm concerned. I am very lucky to have this job, and it's a "Privilege" to work here. Having previously been a senior engineer at an IT company and laid off after 15 years I spent 18 months working one $hit job after another before landing a second chance at a well paying IT job. This time I lasted 10 years before, once again, being laid off. Another miserable 8 months working in deli departments of grocery stores or the back dock of Walmart unloading trucks in the middle of the night. Miserable? Oh yeah.
Landed a mgmt job with GTE. A bigger bunch of back stabbing cretins I have never met. Nepotism was rampant, along with harassment by supervisors and a mgmt monitoring system that logged how many bathroom breaks you took and how many minutes you went unavailable. I hated the people and the place, but was very thankful that it paid good money and had great benefits, so I stuck it out.
BOOM! VZ came into being in 2000. What a world of difference. VZ ripped out those former GTE supervisors and managers by the roots. The little GTE clicks, more like gangs, were lined up quivering, as was I. Over the public address system name after name. Betty, Bill, Kelly......YOUR OUTTA HERE. I found the people on the east coast, including my new east coast manager, direct and open. They have something to say they said it. Over the years I have worked with some super knowledgable Union techs, both in fGTE & the Bell Atlantic techs. Thx directly to many of them I became real good at my job. Middle mgmt on the east coast have, or at least had, real managers, that actually knew how to manage. My life turned around even as the screams and begging for mercy by the fGTE backstabbers echoed in the background. The senior mgmt of vz I have found, by personal experience, to be greedy lying bunch of vermin, with no level too low for them to sink down to, but I remain firm in my belief that I'm damn lucky to have this job.
Working for vz is no longer a career opportunity. It is just a job. Loyalty is a two way street and vz has made their bed...results will continue to decline as the workforce continues to do the bare minimums what they are paid
I've heard rumors that the only people left at Verizon are the cream of the crop. They love the job and company so much, they'd take a cut in pay to stay, drop their benefits and won't accept a severance package (assuming there is one) if they get laid off. Nothing but the best for the brown-nosers.

Well it used to be one of the best...Not so much anymore..unless you are a diverse millennial...then you get the privilege of thinking you are valued until you too become to highly penetrated in your salary range and are shown the door also
Very few people leave Verizon on a happy note. Business careers are journey's not entitlements. Expect to have a number of employers during your career.
