Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Previous Announced layoffs

Sprint – Reducing expenses by $2.5 billion that should not impact its network; cutting severance to one week for each year served. Those with an elephant-like memory will recall that Sprint announced a $1 billion cost-reduction plan back in 2003 following the telecom bust.

◾Verizon Wireless – Reducing 20 regional operations centers to six.

◾AT Texas president said they are hiring 850 in Texas; hired over 4,000 year to date. Sue Marek from Fierce Wireless predicts that AT&T’s move to SDN will result in more job cuts.

AT&T’s accounting and financial reporting is getting harder and more difficult to follow amid acquisitions and restructurings, “For all of 2016, they will be lapping numbers that aren’t quite pro forma, that don’t quite line up with new segment reporting, that still benefit from accounting distortions in wireless, and that have the benefit of an almost blank check of one-time revisions and adjustments, new money found in places where there was none before, weird thing happening in their accounting Deparment. In short , this company is becoming an increasingly complex business. Not a good strategy if the company is trying to sign new investors.

Great comments!!... If you find yourself working in ATO, be prepared for a whirlwind crash training course which will culminate in you raising your hand on most calls, not fully knowing what you need to do to assist your member. Most people don't really know technology, everyone does their own thing, based on their understanding of projects, Area Managers so detached from teams, unable to help them due to their knowledge gaps,/lacks, This would not be a problem if performance would be an indicator for you to actually keep your job, However, the turn over rate is high and they are thin on staff suited to assist those who have questions concerning their call. You will often times be ignored as the "supervisors" and "floor walkers" tend to meet up regularly to share some laughs, to the detriment of any poor soul stuck on a difficult (because training wasn't comprehensive) phone call. Be forewarned.

I know what Donovan does, he is the Chief Buzzword Bingo Officer. He desperately wants to have relevance in Silicon Valley; but has no technical chops whatsoever. I can't count the number of times he has been completely wrong on the technical issues for which he is supposed to be an expert. He categorized an issue we had awhile back where everything failed over automatically as illustrative of the power of SDN. What he failed to mention, is that it failed over due to regular old anycast routing that had been in place for more than a decade, it had nothing at all to do with SDN. Also, google has been fully SDN since around 2005, so we are definitely not "leading the pack" on that front either.

2016 not good for AT&T employees,, AT&T sold $6 billion in bonds Friday to partially pay down its $126-billion debt load. which could see more near-term volatility, and there is not room for underperformance,” most analysts recommend lightening up exposure and switching into Verizon. There may be better new-issue opportunities to get back in the mix on AT&T as the year progresses.” -Fitch Ratings has assigned an 'A-' rating, offering of senior unsecured notes. Proceeds from the notes are expected to be used to refinance debt maturing in 2016 as well as for general corporate purposes.

i don't understand the top heaviness either nor things like what Bill Smith vs. John Donovan does...and if you're cutting all these people...who are you leading exactly? Also agree with the flattened Zappos topology- they do still have leadership though - but its more project/matrix driven, which I think is a cool concept to have the team accountable to each other and decisions driven down at that functional level.

Seems a little too revolutionary for ATT...they like old school, cut costs, cut people who do real work, find money in secret places like your pension.

Company is hiring for Texas but at lower pay, minimal benefits if any and less employee protection told by management that groups are consolidating and current workload is very low. One call center in local area closing and consolidating with another Originally projected to move 140+ staff but "informally" only expecting less than half. Poof! Company found more money

I agree. AT&T is too top heavy.

AT&T will follow sprint and Verizon. Expect a 40% reduction in force within 4 years. What AT&T should do is get rid off their senior managers all the way done to senior technical directors and flatten out their organization structure like zappos and other companies that went no bosses way.
