Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Former employee discrimination

I was recently surplussed and have applied for numerous jobs that mirror my most recent position held at AT&T. I have received a rejection email on every single one stating they went with a more qualified applicant. How can that be when I have over 20 years experience in that type position, met all hiring requirements they were seeking and had a far exceeds performance rating every year while at AT&T. Discrimination against former employees it appears! Anyone else running into same thing? The 60 days to find another job within AT&T before going off payroll was a complete joke as well... ran into the same thing... they went with a more qualified applicant. Nice!!

Why are they requiring a CS degree when they're literally laying people off who have CS and EE degrees?

My org just added the need to get a degree in CS. We only work on network transport. Seems like we will be next.

Sad but the company is not going to keep people when orders are given to downsize. VP's are telling their managers to simply post jobs and not to reply to anyone who reply's. Use any excuse to keep the numbers they are given. If they claim they need to replace a job then someone else needs to go. Another plan is to tell people they need to do additional training to keep up with the new technology. This is all bullshit because it will just allow them to select the bottom half and if everyone does complete the training then you will see a requirement to have a degree in a totally unrelated field. ATS was one group where the requirement for a degree in computer science was added. What good is that type of degree for the people who support equipment in the central offices? See where this is going!!

You have to apply for at least one job while you are still employed at AT&T during that 60 day opportunity they give you to find another job within AT&T before going off payroll. You can't pass on interviews or employment offer if job offered is same level or higher and within 50 miles of where you live. If you do, you could lose your severence package and uunemployment pay could be affected. No worries though very few people are offered another job within AT&T. I have many friends who applied for over 30 jobs during the 60 day period and didn't get a single interview even for jobs they were qualified for and even over qualified for.

I don't understand ".. Remember you have to bid on at least one job to receive unemployment in CA. Also, you can't turn down any interviews or jobs or you will forgo your surplus package. $$$$$$..."

1_For unemployment benefits, Do you need to apply -at least- to one job at AT&T during those 60 days?

2_When you say you cannot turn down any jobs. Do you refer to AT&T during those 60 days? You could get an offer with the same pay w/o having to move?

It's all by design so put your energy in to finding something outside of AT&T like the Fed, State, Local government if you want a good solid retirement. There is definitely life after AT&T. Even if you find a job within, odds are is that you will get surpluses again. Remember you have to bid on at least one job to receive unemployment in CA. Also, you can't turn down any interviews or jobs or you will forgo your surplus package. $$$$$$

They move you right in....wave your pride flag!

They would crap their pants in fear of discrimination litigation and bad press.

So if they aren't filling positions, what do you think is happening to the people that filled sipp paperwork to give the surplus people the opportunity to stay at a job?

I was laid off in September from AT&T. I was offered a drop and compete to move to NJ and work in the GNOC which ideclined. I still got 6 interviews for AT&T jobs. I also had one interview for an outside company and got that job. I never heard back from AT&T on any of the six interviews. Fortunately I have a great job now making a little more money with great people.

I don't want to say too much for fear of it getting someone in trouble, but I was told by a departing Director during my lay-off managers are forbidden from hiring anyone who was surplussed in one of these big surpluses. I think you're screened out by the software and your application is never actually reviewed. I'm young and have all the skills they claim to want in their pivot training/IoT stuff...but they don't actually want any of those skills. They want to outsource.

Sorry, but you're too old and all of your experience is with one company. Both are backdoor reasons to discriminate against you that will never be proven. Happens all the time. Welcome to the new economy, where younger is better because it is cheaper.

I am experiencing the same response. I am referring to this layoff as "Departure by Design". It was calculated, planned and targeted to unemploy long term employees to avoid retirement. Sad but true. I been with company 20 years also and 17 of 20 received "Exceed" Performance Reviews.
