Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Fear & a paycheck for most. Glad I left when I did, though I do miss the bloated pay, a day's work for a weeks pay.

I love working here. Used to get frustrated and fed up trying to get the work done and would, like so many of us, stay late in a vain effort to get things resolved, often missed gym workouts, always late meeting my wife. Then 14 months ago I went out to the field to help an outside tech, who needed a laptop. Manager told me next time I did that I would face disciplinary action and that My numbers should be my first and only priority. Sat at home that night and slowly changed. 1 week later I emerged. Transformed, all bright shinny and new. My numbers each month are super shiny. I make $h!T up like a Hans Anderson fairy tale. When things go wrong, I hide. I haven't done all real days work in over a year. I love it. Never miss my workouts at the gym anymore both my wife and I are happier with the new, shiny me. On a really bad day these days I work myself up into a doze. The only down side is now my wife makes me go to Zumba workouts with her and I have no natural rhythm or sense of direction. Everyone moves right, dummy here goes left. Shiny, shiny, happy people. Oh! BTW, manager got instant karma, riffed. Peace. 😎

Pay, vacation, 401k, pension, no layoff clause, 10 miles from home, boss is over a hour away and leaves me alone for the most part, paid vacations, etc.

It's just a job and I just have 8 more years until I can hit the road but I don't give 2 poops about this place anymore. They've run the drive to do a good job right out of me. It's all about the numbers for VZ so I made it all about the numbers for me as well.

umm...this is a forum for lay offs...so the reason you don't hear a lot of positive is because these people have been laid off. hello

I need money, its a job, if I obtain employment elsewhere I lose out on severance.

Employment elsewhere will most likely be as shitty or worse.

I was layed off on Oct 29 2015.. thank god I was already making an exit plan. The ONLY reason I stayed was the pay and benefits. I worked in the CaTN region and the workload and stress was insane. I'm relieved to be gone.. I would have stayed another 3 miserable years, but they did me a favor letting me go.. maybe other regions aren't as bad..

I shake my head and smile every time I read emotional outpourings of how someone @ vz has so so "loyally" devoted their life, and chose Verizon over their wife & kids and even gave up their dog. I do actually like working for Big Red. I like my actual job and the people I work with. The pay and benefits are decent although healthcare costs have made it where I have not seen a real raise in years. That being said my eyes are wide open. I have 16 years with the factory after a previous career in another industry. I worked for private employers for most of my life. Just before I came to what was then Bell Atlantic, the previous company I worked for was bought by a public company and what a night and day experience that was. What you quickly learn is you are just a number and a resource/asset to be used and discarded at the companies discretion. That made the transition to the phone company an easy one. I understood that I was just a number and have lived with it. I have taken full advantage of the TAP programs and furthering education programs. I have been able to raise my family with quality health insurance and been able to provide for my families basic needs over the years. Up until my current supervisor I have always worked for someone older than myself and they were all from the golden days of the Bell System. Current boss is younger and a very poor communicator. My only hope is to hang on long enough to make to some sort of retirement although what that will look like is rather murky. Yes I do like my job. I don't like the managerial BS, and there is plenty of that to go around.

What keeps me working there? I'm approaching 60 with 25 years in. Just trying to hang on until retirement. I also don't want to let my teammates down. Used to be a pretty good place to work pre-GTE merger. Now we sit on a quarterly results call and listen to the CEO crow about the fire pits and bocce ball courts on the new Cali campus ten days after over 25 people in my director organization were told they no longer had jobs. Clueless execs rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

The $$$ and vacation time I have earned from staying/surviving here 25 years. I am no more loyal to VZ than they are to me. No more ra ra V team BS please. You pay me and I will work pretty simple. We are not a family not even a team anymore. Leadership has made it very clear that loyalty is a one way street. Going to make as much money for doing as little as I can because this is the work environment and attitude that has been created. No more going the extra mile, putting work before family, or even pretending to care about how VZ does as an overall organization. I don't feel guilty at all about my attitude and it is actually the norm not the exception. A few still drink the kool aid and believe the credo crap, but anyone who has been around awhile knows better. They can hire as many millenials as they want, they will never replace the quality of tenured employees they are letting go!

I tried to think of something positve. I guess the pay is ok. It used be better. But all the 2 percents and zero percent years in the contracts have been passed by inflation so even the pay isnt that great anymore

Don't let time fly by and not take advantage of the 8K, the days of permanence is gone.

Out in 14 months I would be fool to leave earlier. I might stay longer, let's see what kind of contract we get.

To be positive... Vz was a good place to work. I worked for 36 years before retiring this year. I tired of working 60 to 80 hour work weeks. In the past, we would be recognized for working such hours, but it became the norm. Instead of being appreciated, we were berated for having any type of problems. We have been downsized to the point where we had to work 60 to 80 hour weeks to stay afloat.

The reason people are negative on this site is because it is a LAYOFF site. People are losing jobs! Yet this company is making more money than ever. People have devoted their lives to the company.

Anonymous204912 - why are you not taking advantage of the 8K for tuition - Vz paid for my under grad and Grad plus more technical courses. I am very grateful for that - when/If Vz says bye bye, I will be prepared with education and work experience - sound like you are here...just go finish you darn degree

You are right - this list will be much shorter than the list of things I dislike... so here it goes:

1) The pay

2) The benefits

3) The commute

4) The internet connection

5) The gym

I waited an extra 3 to 4 years because I wanted my severance package. Also, the 401K match and the health care cost are way above what you are going to find at the average company today. I dont have a severance package available at my new company (never had a lay off in 40 years), so I am always on the look out for a new opportunity. Funny how you can be freed up when you have nothing to lose to leave. If Verizon really wanted to people to leave on their own accord, they would do away with the generous severance packages. I am sure many would leave rather than stay with morale as low as it is.
