Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

This is a company, for years, treated their employees with respect.

I look at some of the comments posted and some turns my stomach. I was a technician for 7 years, 4 in a training center. I took management after that for 10 years as a local manager. I never had a negative year end review and also received the "Potomac Excellence Award", haha. I took a buyout in April of this year. I was required to work nonstop 12-14 hour days, having to have cell phone on while on vacation unless out of the country, just to get my ass handed to me for the most petty things. My area had 40 technicians for 3 counties, with very little fiber. The plant was chopped so bad, mostly due to growth and not enough facilities. I took multiple complaints every day. When you visit a customer 15 times in a year, is it the technician? The company says yes?????? That same area now has 12 techs, still with very little fiber. With the company skinning down the workforce, they now force overtime regularly. Problem-those with kids have to pray that the kids don't get in trouble due to lack of parenting due to excessive work. Yes the techs make good money with the ot but 1st level management gets very little. C&P was a family organization that carried over to Bell Atlantic with great customer service statistics. Before I left, VZ was patting itself on the back for Comcast having a 67% approval rating, while VZ was at 71% rating. Really? Happy about 71%??????? Policies have ruined customer service...i.e.: techs giving out business cards for customers

To call if a problem. Techs have no way to get a ticket in for the customer. ????????? Many resorting to going on the web to enter a trouble report. Then rated on it?????? These guys are fighting the good fight with both hands behind backs. I don't care which party you are from, this is WRONG!!!!' This company worked better when you could have faith that if you did a good job, you could retire there as many did before. Good luck!!!! Shareholders are way more important than customers and employees. Pretty soon VZ will be worse than Comcast or sell the wireline.

I was hired by New York Telephone in 1965 as a panel switchman. Was drafted after 9 months, NYT made up the difference between my Army pay and what NYT paid me for the first six months.. Came back with after 2 years and the Army time was counted toward seniority. I remember that one of the framemen was into bookies for a lot of money, they came looking for him at the switch building threating to kill him unless they were paid. The company paid off the bookies and arranged for his salary to be sent directly to his wife. We also had a foreman who had a stroke in his thirties, and couldn’t work. He had young kids. I remember that the company arranged for him to report to the job one day a year so he could continue to receive full benefits. I retired in 2005. After reading the posts here I cannot believe what a shit company this has become, although it started to change in the nineties, profit comes first, no regard for the people who do the work and make the company very wealthy with the CEO paying himself way more then he's worth. As far moving jobs overseas the government should apply import tax on every overseas worker, they are importing a service. “Times are a changing”

In remember when that little VP Joe with the foul mouth and homophobia was caught red handed fudging service numbers. His directors and mangers were all told to do this, and everyone was afraid of him for some reason. After that the company waited 6 months and wink wink retired him with a fat buy out. People who were canned were posting comments on some Boston news story about the incident, and boy the stories about Joe were despicable. Then VZ lawyers managed to get Boston Globe I think to pull the story and comments. Many Managers wer fired over this meaning no severance and could not collect unemployment. I know for a fact years before this the Company was dealing with one ethics complaint after the other against him. He would make these horrible comments about people on his team at meetings etc. He had a director who sexually harassed a manager to the point she called a lawyer. He was retired with a big payout and company settled out of court with the woamn for $1m. Know of many similar situations all quietly settled with execs given their buy out and a farewell party and then all swept under the rug. Which is why the ever changing Credo has no value. This is NOT an ethical company. Get out while you are young enough to build another career....and while there is still a decent severance package. That is on the way out too.
