I was hired by New York Telephone in 1965 as a panel switchman. Was drafted after 9 months, NYT made up the difference between my Army pay and what NYT paid me for the first six months.. Came back with after 2 years and the Army time was counted toward seniority. I remember that one of the framemen was into bookies for a lot of money, they came looking for him at the switch building threating to kill him unless they were paid. The company paid off the bookies and arranged for his salary to be sent directly to his wife. We also had a foreman who had a stroke in his thirties, and couldn’t work. He had young kids. I remember that the company arranged for him to report to the job one day a year so he could continue to receive full benefits. I retired in 2005.

After reading the posts here I cannot believe what a shit company this has become, although it started to change in the nineties, profit comes first, no regard for the people who do the work and make the company very wealthy with the CEO paying himself way more then he's worth. As far moving jobs overseas the government should apply import tax on every overseas worker, they are importing a service.

I was laid off 5 years ago too - I was a tech. Anyhow, I was fed up, went back and learned networking, now I work in a small IT shop and it's much more stable, less stress and better pay. It's not ideal, it's a struggle but it's at least 50% better than when I was with VZ. The company does not value employees any more.
