Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

No national news press at all, interesting.

Very well put. A job is just a job although you spend the most hours there. Never, ever give all of yourself to your job, you will lose who you are and they can dispense of you without a bat of the eye. You are merely a service, and you are being compensated for your service. You should never get emotionally involved with your job, just give it the best you have, and if that is not good enough, then it's not the right job or company for you anyway. The truth is, if you gave 110% of yourself (big mistake), it will not make a difference come lay off time. You are not a person to a company, you are a service. I do believe there is a lot of age discrimination going on in Verizon, if fact I know it, but proving it will just be a waste of time, because the legal department already figured out beforehand a way to disprove your argument. Verizon is NOT the same company it used to be. The leadership is quite frankly, pathetic. The good leaders are long gone and it is a different company. Never sell your soul to a company that has no soul like Verizon

Anonymous204064, you make an extraordinary amount of judgments for a person who's "not being judgmental" :-)-> Just sayin'

That was well put. Basically the company treats us as whores and when services are complete we are pushed out of the moving car. I feel so cheap now. This is week 3 after having been pushed out of the moving car so I am trying to find something to joke on that would help us all make sense.

I can, and do, empathize with what you say, but have certain reservations about never giving 110% of your efforts. I agree that you should NEVER ever give 110% effort to a company, especially a corporate giant like vz, but you should give 150% to yourself. I'm sorry and not being judgmental but I have worked with so many people since coming to GTE/Verizon 20+ years ago, who are smart and work hard for the company, but do nothing to widen their own skill set, obtain technical certifications by taking classes or even bothering with the paid education vz offers. They do their job and they do it with skill and often a high degree of loyalty that is sadly and seriously misplaced. Never fully confident I never stopped learning and trying to improve myself. Year after year I have invested 150% in myself going to school & taking class after class. My own team ravaged, with my last remaining female colleague, with 29 years of service, asking me, through tear filled eyes why I was spared? I said nothing, but in truth knew she was suffering "telco entitllement" disease, as I call it. She had long ago forgotten she had a job. A JOB. For her, and some of my other colleagues, the job had morphed into an extension of their social life. Wandering from cubicle to cubicle to chat with friends, arranging pot lucks, and going for a weekly "dental" appointment only to return with hair extensions or immaculately manicured nails. I HAVE A JOB. I do not put 110% into vz, rather I put 150% into me. Good luck to all, and whatever God you believe in, may he or she, always walk beside you.

But it is disconcerting that what used to be a good company to work for, turned so quickly. As a former employee, I find it quite unsettling that what used to be a fun place to work, went from fun to backstabbing at such a breakneck speed! As you say - the good leaders are long gone, I should have seen the writing on the wall when he was "moved". I didn't because I thought that maybe it was just a quirk.

And now I find myself looking out - through the morass that is corporate America - and I find little to be thankful for, but thanks for your post.
