Which is a better option? Foregoing the lumpsum $$$ or not?

uh, ya got RIF'ed for a reason (like my husband and I both just did) - they don't want us back so don't think you will be getting a job at VZ anytime soon - you are either too old for them, at the top of the payscale, have no degree or have been written up - that is the criteria for getting rid of the employees who have built the company
With the RIFs a lot of open positions went away as well. Most often job openings already have a candidate the manager has in mind. Probably a bigger consideration is whether or not you you'd want to move. A lot of the RIFs happened in positions tied to that area. Other open positions typically are not there.
Pretty messed up that a lot of our layoffs in my dept was older tenured people. A lot of them 50+. Isn't that kind of discriminating? They said it was based in their stats and if they were on any warnings..but a lot of them had performing stats and not on warnings. I don't agree with the way they are doing things. A lot of people have their all to this company and in turn they got screwed over.
If I get Riff'd on Thursday, I will do whatever I can to find a job.
I will take Internal or external.
PS, I have only been here 3+ years, so I only get 6 weeks.
my husband and I both RIF'ed were never even offered the mention of finding a new position; oh wait that is because we are both over 55! We're gladly signing the you can't sue me papers and taking our money and benefits and moving on....thank God we are FREE!
The internal jobs are posted because they have to. The reqs are written by the Manager who already knows who they want to apply for the job and they write the job description to fit their friend. sometime the friend will write the job description and give it to the Manager to post. Yes this happens . Do not depend on internal job search , take the money and run IF your financial situation can handle it.
I'll miss the five weeks vacation and the seven personal days. I'll miss the pay. That's it.

After 24 years, I am done, and do not intend to look within Verizon for another job. It really is not worth it. It is better to take the money and try a new venue, as what is happening now will likely be the new norm for the forseeable future. Good luck!
I was RIF'd last holiday season and I have moved on. I inquired about a few open positions and with a few hiring managers, but most told me to just leave as the future outlook wasnt good. My wife and I were tired of the layoff looming each holiday season for the past 6 years and we decided that I should go. I found a better paying job with a small company that has been around 40 years and has never laid off people. I wanted out of Telecom because it is just too boom and bust for me. I even had a good job offer from another telecom company that I turned down.
Here's the kicker: the company I work for doesnt have any severance package since they dont do layoffs, so there isnt any incentive to stay and wait for a package. I waited 3-4 years too long to leave VZ because I wanted my package that I thought I had earned. I actually find freedom in the fact I am not leaving anything behind if I leave my current job. My wife is a govt worker and she has switched jobs 3 times in the same time period since their is no incentive to wait.
