Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

H1b program is virtually uncapped.

For every H1b you allow into the country, multiple americans loose the jobs. H1b has restrictions that they can only perform a speciality Job like IT or engineering. Their dependents, like spouses, are allowed to work without any restrictions replacing any american, like bank teller or Walmart clerk. Most of the dependent that enter have engineering degrees. So they will usally replace high earning americans. So don't think that the H1b is capped at 80k people per year. It will be.much higher if you count their spouses and other dependens.

Shall we change the system. Shall we at least try to change the system ?

There are reporters looking for these kinds of stories. Maybe we can try to see who is covering these kinds of stories and try to get in touch with me

You guys have so much time to bash H1bs but NOT ONE HAS TAKEN A STAND AND SAID ENOUGH... LET'S DO SOMETHING... LET'S SEE WHAT http://protectusworkers.org/

CAN DO FOR US.

GO AHEAD GUYS .... expect things to change.... but don't even go to internet and see what resources can help you.... just sit on your couch, and expect things to happen. if it doesn't bash everyone on blogs,.... the govt, the h1bs.... the weather..... I challenge you guys.. Even if one of you does the things that Edison/Disney workers did. You would be in a better state.

I am wasting MY TIME on verizon blog. The other blogs have BRAVE HEARTS.... not HERE.

Most of the American Indians also try to give their children as much education as possible. Until recently educated folks in india used to get more respect in the society than a billionaire. Recently a phd scientist was made the president of India.

In India parents make sure that their kids are educates to Masters. Government subsidizes the higher education. There is nothing like student loan. Childern are treated like kinder garters by their parents until they complete masters degrees by their parents. Parents do not allow you to work while you study. Parents life ambition is to have their children get highest education.

HR does that, but the game is rigged. They will post a job for let's say a Pearl programmer or some stupid scripting job like that, and they will list 65K as compensation. Then they will ask for 8 years of hands of experience and a masters degree. Since our STEM Degrees are 5+ years and you make good money after that very small percent of US tech workers have masters degrees, the ROI is simply not there (lost 2 years of wages, plus very high cost of room/board). But in India, they issue those degrees like there is no tomorrow, your bachelors is typically 3 years and you get your masters in 10 months, so everyone has a masters degree. So, that's how the game is rigged. It gets more complicated once the outsourcers come into play (Tata, Infosys, Wipro, Coginizant, Accenture) - this is what they do. The law says that you have to pay an H1B worker at least 60K per year, that's exactly what they do. So each company sends 100K applications a year, with a 10% success rate they get 5K or 10K spots. So, that's a little army paid 60K. Then they come to VZ, and they say - listen VZ, you have this IT dpt, they make a decent 85K/year average plus vac and benefits, so it costs you 150K/year per workers - we can replace that whole dpt and it'll cost you only 80K per worker as we pay them 60K and they have no benefits and we add a 30% margin at 20K. If you own a P&L, this is an offer that's VERY HARD TO REFUSE. So, it kind of makes sense to do it, especially if you have scale and the oursourcer guarantees that things will not fall apart (typically quality drops tremendously but things do not fall apart). Going back to that P&L, if you are running it, and if your bonus is correlated with your P&L health, it totally makes sense and everybody in management loves it.Again, I am super simplifying things here but as someone who was part of the aforementioned scheme for almost 10 years I think I have shed some light here...

493 - your suggestion is a good one, but under current law, that's illegal. And that's why we've got to push this injustice to the media and demand our elected officials change this.

Why cant HR open the posting exclusively for citizens for several weeks before they consider H1B's or other non citizens? They should explicitly state that on the job posting.
