Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Does anyone know how the selection of employees to be riffed works ? Is it done at the manager level, director level or vp ?

I am a manager and didn't have ANY input. It didn't come from my Director or VP either! My employee that was RIFD didn't (and still doesn't) make any logical, statistical or financial sense. They must have drawn names from a hat!

A few of us were picked due to our geographical location. A lot of people in IT were hit if they were not in 1 of the 10 preferred IT centers. Experience or knowledge base wasn't a factor!!!

Numbers come down to manager, no names just numbers. Manager adds the names to match his/her number count.

Location, Location, Location.

We were told to report to the mother ship if we wanted to keep our jobs. Generally older people are the most paid and least likely to move

Really depends on the position you are in.

In this case, it may be the right place at the right time (or not)

For my ex team (my last day today) it's an application HR uses. Early part of this year I spent days inputting data into this HR application about my team of highly skilled IT people. Criteria included: geographic location (all my team were management & remote) skill level, knowledge, work ethic, value to the group/vz, willingness to self-sacrifice to get the job done, level of legal & Regulatory compliance. It took about a day per person to input long and detailed data, with scoring of 1 through 5 (5 = best). Once input the application created a totem pole with best at top going down from there. From that moment all riff determinations became completely automated. Today? 60%+ of team riffed by automated HR app. My director did same to all his managers. Director told me offline my BIG mouth and constant criticism of how vz is run had finally caught up with me. ROFLMAO

Our jobs in Temple Terrace were sent to India. Many of us saw the names of the over 60 people who were being trained over there. The rationale is greed, pure and simple.

VPs set quotas, directors take feedback from mgrs and make decisions on who is out. Managers typically do not make decisions, in some cases they can influence decisions. In many cases, managers do not know who is on the final list. Directors are given numbers that they have to meet. Hope this helps.

If you have never worked or dumped the work abruptly and moved to another project, if you have political skills, if you are cunning, if you have as less skill/training as possible, if you can work multiple levels up bypassing some levels, if you can talk continuously without any meaning, if you can find faults with the people who work hard and deliver... then you will be........

Well I can tell you how it's NOT done. It's certainly not done by knowledge or skill. In fact, quite the opposite. But seriously, the people making these decisions are clueless because they are declaring surplus in many departments that have mandatory overtime due to shortage of workers. Total VZ logic.
