I personally found the career services to be a waste of my time. I learned more on my own by reading articles on LinkedIn and trial and error. I was actually able to teach my councilor more about LinkedIn than she knew. But it's different for everyone. Some people like it. I found employment on my own with no help from them. Actually I did everything I was advised wouldn't work to find something.
Rif'd in July 2012. I found the career transition services quite helpful and effective. At a minimum, your resume will be improved, and you will learn that the big job boards are not the best way to hunt down your next role. As mentioned many places, build your network and rely on it to help you. You may be surprised where your next job surfaces - in my case, a friend of a friend (who had never met me!) passed along a position that fit me to a T. I felt lucky, but I have since found out that my experience is not at all unusual. So many people have been terminated or laid off in the last 10 years that it is common for it to show up on a resume. Identify your skills, eliminate the Verizon lingo, and begin the next phase of your career. There is a job for you out there ...

I was laid off in Feb 2015 as well. Wishing you all the best of luck. In my experience, the job market treats former VZW employees VERY well...you will be fine!

@Anonymous193771 It's been hard after 18 years in the job market. My advise would be to take a couple weeks to let it settle. Finish out your time, and start deciding what direction you want to go in professionally. You actually get a chance to re-invent yourself. It's ok to be bitter and angry, but don't let it cloud your judgement or tarnish your brand. It was nothing you did. Just keep telling yourself that. Get on LinkedIn if you aren't already and start polishing up your profile and brand. Keep the non anonymous negativity off the social platforms.
You'll be ok. There are so many opportunities out there for former employees from a company like Verizon. But you have to sell your value and put your name out there.
I was able to sock some of my severance away for my daughters college. Money I would never have had if I wasn't laid off.
Go through the stages of being laid off. It's ok. Just don't let it burn any bridges. How you react to this will set the stage.

Sorry to hear about this. I was laid off from VZW back in March of this year after 18 years. I know It hurts and sucks, but keep your head up.
Wireline IT here, we are losing 20%. Most are techs, not managers. I'm gone. Last day is Dec 31.
@282 They have to mix in younger people to make it NOT look like age discrimination. It's a clever trick used by lots of companies
@ 406, thanks for letting us know. Meanwhile, there are 64 jobs in Irving that Verizon has posted since October, most of them from the past 2 weeks, and a LOT of them posted today. This is bullshit.
Irving, TX, MTS 1, 30's, seen layoffs of fellow MTS I, II, and III, and three managers, one of whom has been training his VDSI replacement the past 2 weeks.
10:30 EST I'm still waiting to find out if I'm safe...the wait is unbearable...

In Corporate IT we lost 20% today in my Executive Director's org including one Director. I'm in the Tampa Tech Center and see lots of people walking out the door with folders. We were told the people Impacted will go off payroll Dec 31.
In wireline, it is directors. Not in wireless.

Got the call as well... same deal have until 12/31 but I'm only 30. So i guess it's not just the "old people" like others have been saying, their touted "Millennials" aren't safe either.
Lots of people getting the dreaded call...your not alone. I'm waiting on our manager to call one way or the other.
I got the dreaded call this morning. I work in Hilliard and was just transferred to a new team in August. On payroll until 12/31. I am over 50 and made a decent salary...
