Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

In Florida we are seeing the laid off employees coming into the offices. This poses a huge security threat/concern. Anyone else see this?

Tons of layoffs in VZ Wireline the past 15 years, I don't remember an incident, and most had access to the office for 30 days after notice. This RIF appears to be handled differently likely because they do not want anyone looking for internal positions anymore, this might be the new way of doing RIFs in VZ. I guess we will find out tomorrow when VZ Wireline employees get hit.

It's comments like this one that proves the same sad fact as every other VZW Layoff... they always end up hanging on to some of the most inconsiderate, greedy, and unethical employees of all. I've sent it following every mass layoff over my 13 years with the company. While my comment is certainly not meant to be a generalization of all employees left... I'm primarily speaking of the heartless prickly that made this post.

Well done, man... way to show support and empathy for your former coworkers. Gotta love the sense of entitlement, lack of backbone, and the CEO-laid red carpet of the millennials!

Yes... I got my call last week. Best of luck to you all on making it through the remaining layoffs, the next wave of layoffs in 1Q16, and most importantly... cleaning up the organizational chaos created by the all-knowing C-levels.

I really don't consider it "respect" to allow employees who have been riffed to stay on payroll for a few weeks. In many places, they terminated vital managers who actually knew what they were doing and replaced them with higher or lower band employees who are not familiar with their new role in the reorg. The people that they kept on payroll probably have information that they need during the adjustment period. Don't worry, the company will toss them out of the buildings once they are finished pulling all the information they need from them to keep the new markets running. They are just cannibalizing right now.

Showing employees respect, as Verizon does, goes a long way. We work in GLASS buildings, taking a card key grants very little safety from anyone intent on causing harm. In some countries with very little workplace violence, employees are required by law to remain on company premises while they're looking for alternate positions and retraining for 90 days. This could indirectly force a company to do whatever is necessary to make sure that employee is treated appropriately, considering they're required by law to remain in their previous position for three months. Companies that allow their employees to remain on premises is the sign of a company that goes the extra mile to take care of their people, even those they must let go.

It may be a point, but this message board was not the correct place to say it. This board is regarding the layoffs and people are also posting they got RIF'd, so people reading this comment would be insulted. The correct way for the person to handle this should have been discreet... Maybe contact their manager and then go from there... not post it on this board like there is something wrong the people...because I'm sure the person who posted it is also talking about in their office...

You can show compassion for someone and still be concerned for your own safety.

Taken from an article in the Wall Street Journal:

Police investigate the multiple shooting outside the Empire State Building.

A disgruntled worker who gunned down a former colleague and injured nine bystanders outside the Empire State Building on Friday morning had been laid off, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Jeffrey Johnson, 58, who embarked on a rush-hour shooting rampage outside the midtown landmark had worked for six years at apparel company Hazan Import Corp., authorities said.

While the shooter’s motive is still unclear, security experts say the incident serves as a fresh reminder to companies that workplace violence poses a significant threat – especially when employees have reason to be disgruntled, such as after a firing. Often, there are clues leading up to the incident.

More than one-third of companies have experienced an incident of workplace violence, which might include an assault or threat, according to a recent poll of 401 human resource professionals by the Society for Human Resource Management. Altogether, nearly two million American workers report being victims of workplace violence each year, according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Of the roughly 4,500 fatal workplace injuries in 2010 (the most recent year for which the data are available) 11% were homicides, the agency says.

It happens. No need to jump all over them for bringing a very valid point.

Many people were informed they are on payroll until the end of the year, so the people you are seeing may be coming to work like they are supposed to do according to their package. I can understand your concern, but please keep in mind that you might not know all the details of their reduction notice. Have a little compassion for these poor souls, and feel temporarily blessed that it wasn't you this time. It DID impact my family, and our family member feels horrible going in to work for a company that doesn't want him anymore.

Do you even understand how embarrassing it is to come into the office and clean out your desk, get boxes to pack you stuff ..etc. Believe me EVERYONE knows who has been riffed , thanks to certain Admin Assistants and overall busy-body gossip artists. I doubt if anyone who was RIF'd cares to do anything security related. They may be just passing / wasting time looking jobs in VZ-Jobs which are already filled / going to be filled by the Manager's friends. Have a F N heart and treat them with compassion, respect and help them pack / clean out desk / office if need to. YOUR RIF Time is Coming , Bet the Ranch !!!!

The OP is a heartless idiot. Most laid off are on payroll until the end of the year. Maybe you should be given the task of cleaning out desks and delivering their belongings to their homes.

So much for CORE Values and respecting your fellow co-workers but I guess Lowell killed that lofty ambition last Wednesday.

I can understand the perspective of a concerned employee worried about possible retaliation, and I can also understand the indignation and offense taken by a terminated employee who feels that concern is an insult to their character. We can't ignore the frequency of mass and workplace shootings, we just can't. And we can't ignore how many times the shootings have involved disgruntled employees. We can't pretend like we haven't heard this line on the news "a shooting occurred today at an office building in Anytown. 3 people were killed, including the suspect." It happens so often that is almost doesn't shock us anymore. And no, Verizon did NOT and IS not handling this properly, they're not, so of COURSE you are going to have some very angry, upset people, not to mention sometimes desperate and scared, especially is this layoff will crush them financially. Those feelings don't guarantee a violent reaction, but we would be ignorant and naive to just assume that it would NEVER happen to Verizon. Even people not directly involved are often caught in the violence. Think about it, if your wife, or husband, or daughter, worked in an office where people had been abruptly let go, and a supervisor, or manager, or any employee, for that matter, was specifically concerned about 1 employee who they felt truly had the potential to come back to the office and hurt people, wouldn't you WANT that person to speak up? To say "Hey, I think we need to be very careful with this person."? What if your loved one was hurt or killed, and later you found out that a couple people were actually worried about that employee losing their sh*t and hurting people, but they didn't speak up? II respect the right of someone to feel angry, betrayed even, without retaliating, but I think the risk of pretending that is not a possibility is too great.

Look dude, people turn in notices all the time in retail stores and allowed to work out their two week notice. They have access to their'office' and customers too. Go work on finding a new job, not showing your ignorance here.

you are clueless now aren't you? I am one of them! Maybe not assume who is speaking and the situation he/she is in.

Please learn the process as well, you stay on payroll and in system, which does NOT equal access to the office.

You see this at companies that treat their employees respectfully, which is why Verizon is a great place to work. When you treat people right, you don't worry about them working along side their co workers as long as they possibly can.

They are employed until December 31, and aregion allowed to post for positions internally. If a person poses a risk, it should be dealt with. If not, given the way the layoffs were handled, it seems like the lady they can do to be courteous if so to a long time employee. A courtesy you'd like if it happended to you. You must have bigger problems to worry about, don't you?
