I am in my mid fifties and have over 30 years experience in landline telecommunications. I am in the best shape of my life. I was denied employment with Verizon for a landline technician job. I was told that there were 4 applicants with more qualifications. ( I have Cisco and copmtia Certs). The interviews went extremely well, I wonder if my age was the cause for me not getting hired. Hmm, a large responsible corporation wouldn't break the law would it?

I hate to say this, because everyone will think I am a Verizon mole, but knowing that my younger co-workers have a family to raise, I am glad they selected me for separation. My children are out on their own, my 401K is in good shape, and I will be OK. I can think of a couple other people who were targeted that were in a similar situation as me. If a company must trim some fat, selecting the older, better financially established employee for separation could be considered more appropriate than one with a family to raise. I am not saying there were no younger employees targeted! But I think in my region the selection process had forethought (which is amazing because management normally has none) and not necessarily malicious thoughts. A lot of people on the network side over the years received VARS--- thousands of $$$$ --- what a deal! I am glad I did not piss those grants away on some toy! I invested the money instead. So sorry if I am coming across as an ass here, kiss it! Businesses have layoffs and it seems they may have made thoughtful choices... Now, do you feel any better? LOL!
Verizon is definitely targeting employees based on seniority and age! All employees (past and present) are aware of this practice. I was laid-off in June 2015, as result of Finance Transformation (what a joke) considering employees had to reapply for their JOBS. It is nearly impossible for management employees to transfer internally. It just does not happen. I had a number of recruiters on internal job posting (this is done as matter of policy) state they are directed to fill positions with preferably young NEW HIRES! I would think it former employees contact Department of Labor - EEOC .... it was trigger some type of investigation.
Don't expect government to do anything about it, just as the FCC quite inept at anything
it was definitely age discrimination where I am - everyone here had over 20 years with the company, many over 30 - and frankly if you have a copy of the webcast that was done on Wednesday - he made a comment about all the OLD people which was shocking! Bet the lawyers were going crazy when they heard him!
Can.EEOC ask verizon for ages of the employees that are let go in the past one year? Say there are 60% people 45 and above. Is that called discrimination? Can EEOC force verizon to rehire all those that are let go?
What about gender or race decriminalization? What about non-American vs. Anericans? I am sure out of those let go there are 90% citizens and 10% non-citizens.

Age discrimination can be addressed with class action law suits; start by contacting EEOC.

Demoralizing can only happen you if you let it.

The company's leadership never had any morals to begin with so no shock they're not acting with morals in layoffs.
