A complete failure of leadership in the investment decisions, planning, allowing reckless hiring, etc. Why did they allow so much fat to accumulate. Why were they not allow attrition to balance for the changing market conditions? Why did they allow HR to refill the open positions until few days ago? This is a complete disrespect for human capital and treating the families and employees as an inventory of lifeless goods - and applying supply/demand principles. They could have handled this situation much more gracefully given that they are still in positive margins and need for a drastic cut in a single quarter is not warranted.

These RIFs are about EXPENSE Cuts and stock price PERIOD. Not about skills, rating or performance. Wireline NortheEast is toast , it has to get down to a level where some company will buy it.
Sea Bass is correct. The number of manager/director affirmative action positions is staggering. In any fair system, they would have been toast years ago. If we don't hire the best individual for each position on merit, shame on us. Political correctness now rules and is getting stronger all the time. I am afraid it is to late for this once great company.
A layoff is not about skills, rating or performance. It is always about how well you worked up your chain, and do you always say "yes boss" or not. If this is about performance then why are the people with most experience let go? Have they performed well for 20 years and just now lagging behind?
I agree with changing as customers needs change, there is no other way. Doesn't have to mean drastic changes need to happen every year internally. Marketing needs new idea's.
Well to my knowledge it's not about reorganization it's about money, like I needed to remind anyone. Besides the management, there is firings for people on a consistent low rating which makes sense to me. I seen a few people that deserved to go, get cut. No matter what the PC crowd tries to brainwash you with, I see a lot of dumb hirings based solely on race, gender whatever it is. It's completely obvious and it's a failed ideology. They need to fire the dumbasses that keep driving this thoughtless mindset. You hire the best people, period. There is a lot of management and a lot of engineers per area where I'm hearing our competition has a more centralized approach to that, which makes sense sometimes when thinking of a firm grip of control. What did any dictator in history do to his generals when they became too plentiful and too disorganized? (See Soviet Union 1938-1943). I see a lot of dumb mistakes being made and unaccountability when coming to PO and how it's being spent, also ordering more than needed where you have spent waste. I see a lot of "new ground breaking" tools being developed where there was already something there to begin with that just wasn't being used to its potential. Then you have a BS line about "we embrace change" when anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that consistency and experience of use helps efficiency's, speed, customer impact more than constantly hitting the reset button with this BS changes. The idea is to take what you have get everyone efficient at it, and add improvements. Not drastic changes. The embrace line is BS. Some change is however good.
It is a biggest capitalist/management lie- you can not say employees are an expense to a company. Company does not exist without employees. If your cell tower is not an expense then employee is not an expense either.
Yes...I wouldn't call this a leadership. They have failed completely in operating this company. They hired without any foresight until last week.
It is the new norm for VzW. It's like a family with unlimited income spending wildly and then all of a sudden they realize that trust fund is going to dry up 10 years down the road if they don't make changes. These are those changes. The number one expense to a company is employee salary , benefit and associated misc expense. How many employees truly, truly have 40 hours of work every week? RIFs will continue every quarter. And HR will continue to hire because the company will require specific talent as technology changes.
