Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Reasons why

There are several factors behind this reorganization. Wish I could upload a power point...... kidding.

  1. redundancy... the axing of the Areas has been speculated for years. Too many layers. Too many leaders. The more layers the more salaries the more executive layers the more executive salaries.

  2. Why now? Unless you have been under a brick the word Millennial should be a household phrase by now. These over educated, unemployed are our future customer. Sure they live in the basement of their parents house but that is exactly why vz needs to prepare. They are broke, and we are not cheap. If we want to be competitive we need to be cheaper on the device side as well as service. This means overhead reduction, fast and effective. The timing was perfect and I suspect it will continue over the next few years. Look at retail, from suits to playground clothes. Look at CMO, wearing a t shirt to the reorg webcast. I for one took offense.

  3. Technology .....history Tells us progress always means less humans. Think about every invention and factory. they will continue to hire but the investment will be a whole new strategy. Cheaper labor, overseas workforce.

  4. Taking a page from other playbooks.... jobs will go overseas. Jobs will go remote. The office is a dying model. This equals cost reduction.

  5. Personal soap box....I have seen people placed in leader roles due to friendships etc. Some are actually good performers but some just placed in roles over more qualified. Now of course we all may have or will have this advantage from time to time in our careers but there are a few I have seen who's entire career can be traced to one persons influences. There's nothing like working for a promotion in you channel that you know has been waiting for you and when the opportunity comes up some guy from another business unit with little to no experience gets it over you. There are some loyalties that can't be explained. You wonder what's behind it.

  6. The reorg makes sense but it goes without saying colleagues, friends, families are impacted. Our thoughts are with them.

And if your staying buckle up. The pressure will be like never before. You were selected...... expect long hours high expectations as your reward.

The jobs are going going away period as technology replaces humans. The wealth will be shared by the few and the many will be dependent on the government. Now is the time to begin preparation. This is a wake-up call to action!

I am not from PR, I am saying all the large companies in the US who have little economic understanding and the impact layoffs generate are the problem. With the current layoffs Verizon causes a dent in the economy and in the long term they actually injure themselves. By decreasing overall buying power in an economy you hurt the economy as a whole. That is where layoffs become destructive. It not only impacts the lives of the employee, but every interaction they have.

It's a self-feeding cycle that no exec wants to fight for some reason (well, the reason is greed and a lack of ethics). Fewer employed people means less spending. Less spendng shrinks the overall market and leads to pricing pressure. Smaller market and lower prices mean lower margins. To increase margins, companies engage in layoffs for a quick-fix solution. Now the cycle starts all over again. Instead of working towards a LONG-term growth and sustainability goal, these guys instead focus on the theme du jour: "Shareholder value". Now, if you're looking for a 2-3 quarter return, these tactics may work, but the long-term goal of increasing company worth suffers. All so those who have compensation packages tied to share price can cash in. It should be a law that these packages are void if, under your watch, layoffs of more than 2.5% (or something similar) of your workforce occur. Simply because you are not acting in the best interest of the company and the economy by reaping reward for what essentially amounts to failure. Yes, any time you have to shed 5% or more of your workforce at one time is a FAILURE to properly manage the business and anticipate required moves. After all, isn't that how they justify their compensation? Because of the scale of their decisions? Punishments should be n the same order as the reqards if that is the case. I guarantee you that if their salary was limited to the average wage of those laid off during the year, there would be a concerted effort to actually GROW the business, keep people employed, and keep their eyes looking ahead. Gone should be the days of talking about it in whatever parlance is in vogue, dressed as buffoons, and rolling out tone-deaf blather and tepid products. All the "Millenial" talk is just that: talk. They've already demonstrated their inabilty to produce anything that "resonates" with that demographic. The ineptitude of the last 2 years alone should have shown these guys the door. Ford, Watson, Rockefeller, Smith. Who do you identify current leadership with? Hint: Smith was the captain of the Titanic.

I agree too many layers. However most of the people fired - there were no lay offs- were not management. They were analysts and consultants - old school hard working talent. A title change from AD to senior manager with no cut in pay is pointless and just shows they're still taking care of the wrong people. There are so many money saving internal process improvements suggested by the real working staff - Kabashed by stubborn backwards thinking. Self absorbed leadership. Sad. This chaotic change will make them bloated stagnant and slower than ever.

I know there are are some folks like you from verizon PR org trying justify this layoff. No one is questioning is reorganization but the timing AND associated collateral damage AND the huge layoffs in a single quarter AND the leadership failure to not able to do the right things at right time. Is unexcusable. The leadership MUST be accountable for allowing reckless hiring until few days ago and all these years. They should have restrained back filling attrition and gracefully handled the slaughtering of the humans, children and the families. Remember, millennials is NOT a overnight phenomenon. The generations change over decades. Has this leadership been SLEEPING all these years and not gradually balancing the ecommerce with brick and mortar.

There is one flaw. This goes for any company in this economy. Economically the US is 70%+ consumption and service related. If an economy outsources nearly every possible job it can. That means the only jobs available are jobs that require a physical presence. Technology is capable of replacing some physical presence. At that point you have an extremely large percentage of low paying jobs or no jobs. You can only have so many construction, mechanics, welders etc. So where as an economy do we go from there? An over whelming majority of people won't we able to afford housing and food let alone anything else. The destruction of an economy comes from the lack of understanding impacts related to micro and macro economics and how an economy is interconnected.
