Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

HGC Network was affected today with more coming tomorrow

Such a sad day as Cell techs, Switch Techs, Systems, Real Estate, System Performance had some layoffs today. Nobody in management yet. I cannot believe that I literally saw the slaughter of the Corporate America today & it appears the credo means nothing.

Many in upper leadership were laid off too, Executive Directors, Directors & Managers. This was to align the company, very sad day but it wasn't just front line employees. Also at least being non-union you know if your position isn't being eliminated (which would happen with a union too) you at least are ranked on performance versus a union contract that would save the lazy low performing.

187661, A651 is the exception rather than the rule. Good, smart Union people don't look at non Union people as the enemy, nor take pleasure when you're hurt. We see you as people who have yet to take the opportunity to organize and take advantage of the rights you have as American workers. All over this country, for the last 75 years, working people have been under attack. If you chart the decline of the middle class over that time period, it runs parallel to the decline in Union membership. What we really need to do, ALL of us, Union and non, is stop demonizing one another, and work together against who is our obvious common enemy: the ownership class who continue to chip away at every benefit we've fought for for no other reason than to line their own pockets. We have the power, all we have to do is use it.

To those being slaughtered at Verizon wireless right now, I have one suggestion, contact your nearest CWA (Communication Workers of America) or IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) telephone division office and organize. If you were to all sign cards and vote to organize now, they'd immediately have to cease and desist all layoff actions until the company enters negotiations with the union to try to put together a contract. Do not ever think that the boss or the company is your friend. The only ones we can count on is each other. When workers unite, we can't be beaten, history proves that fact. Good luck everyone. Hang tough.

If this layoff was "organized by qualification/job proficiency" how come that my group (12 folks) lost 4 resources, all of them over 45 and with consistently better performance if compared with at least 6 folks who were kept. Give me a break, it was all dollars and cents

Wireline here and we haven't had layoffs in the 20 I've been here (for anyone hired pre-2003, post-2003 start dates don't have employment security in the contract).

Working without a union contract here on the wireline side. Have to wonder if this slaughter was timed to be in sync with the lockout rumors that have been floating around wireline. Wireline walks out and there are now a new crop of job seekers out there?

This is the biggest layoff affecting wireless that I know of, but here is the thing, wireline is union. Wireline has layoffs, therefore union organization has layoffs too. Unions don't protect employees from layoffs, they just organize the layoff by seniority or seniority/qualifications. These layoffs were organized by qualification/job proficiency.

Speedy recovery to all of those that have been impacted.

I am union and I feel terrible about what's going on for all the non-union employees. I think #651 is a horrifying le person for posting what he/she did. It's juvenile and gives the rest of he union a bad name, and then you wonder why people rip it apart.

I do think everyone should join a union, as it is for our protection in these situations, but I would try to educate, not be a complete, self-rightous a$$hole as #651 has done. Please don't think that everyone who is union is like that, because it's just not so.

You all had a chance to join the union. It's not too late to join the union. Next time it will be a lot harder to get rid of people. Verizon is heartless. Verizon claims to care about its employees. They usually do layoffs just before Christmas. Verizon is all about making money for the CEO, and executives.

A651, you are exactly why everyone hates unions. Your post is bs .... only people that enjoy others loosing a job is a scumbag union guy ... thx for confirmation of my disdain for unions.

But when Wireline had Rifs, Layoffs, etc., I'm sure not a tear was shed in Wireless.

Welcome to our nightmare. Only difference, we're Union so at least, it goes by the contract.

Maybe you folks in Wireless should stop laughing at the Wireline Union and run to join.

Send a message to Lowell and the rest of the money grubbing, overpaid executives.

It's time to Unionize and put a stop to Lowells 66,000 + a Month, yes a Month Pension while he's f***ing all if you rubes!!!
