Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

This was unwritten but coming...

I truly feel bad for my counterparts and their families going through this. I would not want to be in their shoes at this time. But, if you look at the decisions being made at middle management and as a company there are 2 big giveaways that this was coming. The first sign is the absurdly high amount Verizon paid to buy out the Vodafone stock. Even if you factor the amount of millions we pay in dividends yearly to Vodafone in stock, it will take many years to pay off the billions we paid to them to buy out the stock. This is a cost Verizon took on when vodafone wasn't really bothering wireless by controlling their decision making abilities. Who is counting these things?

Second biggest problem is that management in the markets hasn't fired anyone in the last 5 years. Maybe it's different across the country? Instead they keep requesting headcount so they can hire more incompetents without any degrees or experience. Now we have extra employees fighting for their 'share' of work in the teams. There are also multiple directors without any clear direct reports or very minimal responsibilities & budgets.

After giving landline full control over wireless (the cash cow), they will kick and groan and say why aren't we cutting from over there, and only in wireline. This new "structure" is modeled after wireline, and wireless doesn't work the same way. We've had a successful formula for years and this is being flushed away because we gave the keys to a failing model.

Shall I dig into the whole career advancement opportunities in network, again unless you are a part of W.A.V.E (Womens association of Verizon employees) or VLDP (Verizon leadership development program) you will never make it anywhere even if you get dozens of 5-star ratings. If you are either of these, or both, you are almost guaranteed to be successful. The environment has gotten very toxic and I wouldn't be surprised if many employees defect from their wireless roles for other companies.

Again, this isn't a jab at anyone getting laid off, just a FYI for those of you looking at these things. Best of luck to all of my counterparts that are going through this.

The biggest load of crap is saying the changes were necessary to get millennials. Wasn't are wonderful new branding suppose to do that. Diego Scotti is stealing money as far as I can tell. He worked at J Crew so he brings S, M, L, and XL to Verizon. Wow how long did that take for him to think up. Then he has the slogan Simply, for you, Reliably. That doesn't even sound correct. How about Simply, Reliably, For You. Better Matters. We have been using Better in some form as an internal slogan for years. Lowell hires a guy in a T-shirt and he thinks he has the next Steve Jobs. I didn't even me too the new logo. A check at the end. Did we really pay someone to come up with that? No wonder we had to lay people off. So many dumb executive decisions that add no value.

We sold the towers. Did they use the money to pay down debt? No they took Wall Street bankers advice and did a stock buy back. Juice up the stock to put more money in Lowell and Strattons pockets. Maybe it was time for a reorg but greed lead this decision. The guys at the top wanted more at everyone else's expense.

698, I am the original poster. Last I checked wireless paid their own bills for cell towers from their budgets. They have a team that pays upfront for any structural upgrades to towers in order to mount the antennae & cabling. They also pay monthly rent to the tower owners for their antenna centerlines. Not sure where you are getting your information, but in order to maintain a cell service you need people like System Performance Engineers, Construction managers, RF Engineers, Cell Technicians, and Switch technicians. The same people who were let go today. These people are not sitting back and collecting the cellphone bills as you say. As a matter of fact, wireless is required by company mandate to put money in the other pocket for wireline by using them to lease telco circuits. Even when cable companies offer to get the job done in less than 2 weeks vs the 2 month lead time from wireline. Again, this is just facts from working in wireless.

No disrespect, but how are ATT and Sprint any better? All these years , having CAME FROM Sprint, I always saw Verizon as "different", on a higher level, more stable. Now this shit.

All the top management is from wireless not wireline. But wireline has been demanding for several years that wireless pay for the maintenance and repair of the cellphone towers. If they do pay for that( which is currently paid for by wireline) than wireless is not the cash cow people claim it is. Remember the original building of the cellphone network was by people paying their landline bills. Wireless just collect cell bills and says look at all the money we make. How about wireless starts paying for everything pertaining to wireless ( cellphones, towers, repair of towers, storm damage to towers) and then we compare their bottom line to wireline a bottom line.

Dude or Dudette. You answered your own question. Directors with no budget or clear role? Hiring under-educated employees? No layoffs for years, but just reshuffling of employees? Wireline used to operate that way a decade ago. Now it is a lean machine, with RIFs every year, often 4 , 5 times a year. Expect this new model with Wireless. This is the big cut. Then groups will be shaped and targeted RIFs will take place every quarter going forward, with new hires with talent as needed.
