Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Not pro union but it is times like these when I wonder why VZW never went union?

Working without a contract here on wireline (misnomer since wireless can't work without wireline and less than 10% of my day is spent on copper related orders/troubles) and not a fan of the union by any means but thinking that no layoff clause is worth my union dues right about now. Not a kick in the teeth for our co-workers that got crushed today but maybe some those left should think about...

Why aren't you pro union? Do you not like weekends? Or vacation? Or not having 18 hour work days? Or having meal breaks? Or having job safety? Or having workers comp? Or having any sort of safety regulations regarding risks of electrocution/fire? Do you like having a 401k? Do you like having health insurance? Do you like being paid more than pennies a day or even pennies a week?

Look @ what the work world was like before unions. We are slowly returning to it as more people say they "don't like unions..." - We are already in a world where you are 12 times more likely to die at work due to employer negligence than to be murdered by a criminal. Do you want the rate to go higher? Or do you think the risk of dying at work is exciting - hell if you're that much of an adrenaline junkie they should increase the chance of dying. Mandatory russian roulette on your lunch break, anyone?

Care to elaborate? We haven't had any one seperate without wanting to (no tech RIF's, plenty of management RIF's) in my area but they haven't replaced anyone that has left in years. They moved most of the copper techs here over to CMB (Consumer Mass Business) and then bounced them in to the FiOS load as needed. CMB has forced OT (currently only forced 8 on Saturday if one doesn't have 8 hours of OT by Saturday but was forced 12's for a few months straight).

Look at what happened to our copper folks. Union saved only a handful of jobs. The do get a bit better separation terms, but if you calculate in Union dues it's a wash. I am not bashing them, just stating facts here
