Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Decent place to work. Great benefits. I had the fortune of having a great boss and of being part of a great organization. It consistently surprised me how for a company the size of Verizon, my org always felt like a small family.

That said, I understand most organizations around the company are not like this. Furthermore, there's plenty of politics and massive red tape that hinders innovation. There's definitely an us vs them mentality in dealing with different departments.

I love and hate this place at the same time. There's immense pride in working for the industry leader. It was also nice to work for a company that had money in the bank to make interesting deals happen, and for bonuses, for annual raises, etc. On the other hand, there's the Verizon that doesn't hold good on its promises, skirts the line on agreements, and nickels and dimes its customers like no other. There's also the old, stuffy corporate environment still very much at play. It is maddening to see the potential and yet see the company held back by its old ultra corporate roots and bad elements. In short, it's a company that needs to really decide what it wants to be and execute strongly on that vision.

While I worked 26 years on the wireless side ( and all the legacy companies that eventually became Verizon Wireless) . It was awesome at times ( pay, the coworkers and bonuses ) but it was cutthroat, dog eat dog, stressful, high anxiety, long hours and sacrifices in terms of family and outside activities. It literally is a culture that consumes you. Take the severance and get out like I did in 2012. Contrary to what they would have you believe, life is good outside Verizon Wireless. In my area of the company, we've been saying things like, "Move that deck chair a little to the left! Isn't the Titanic a wonderful ship?"

I can talk for project managers in NYC - there is a lingering and consistent threat of layoffs - this has made me looking over your shoulder and constantly worrying about job security. If you look at what's happening it is obvious that resources that are being laid off are not always weak or the worst team members. Many times it simply comes down to dollars and cents and how much a person is paid. In 2015 so far, I'm aware of over 10 folks laid off from different departments, one had thirty years of service, the other one was 20 or more. Now you tell me, how would you feel?

Union is strong, you get a chance to travel to different locations but you can never move up in the ranks
