20% was never mentioned. It also seems rather high. That means 1 out of every 5 employees? ~36,000 people? Seems unlikely. I'm guessing less than 5%, or at most up to 10%.

Verizon today announced that it is cutting its workforce by 20%. Across all of it's divisions this represents a total reduction of nearly 35k workers. It will combine it's regional operations into larger geographical areas and eliminate the redundancies in it's area operations groups. It will also work over the next year to consolidate it's call center operations and streamline efficiencies to better serve it's customers. It simultaneously announced that retail operations will be consolidated and it will be reducing it's overall retail operating footprint by 50% over the next 3 years. Also planned if further divestiture of legacy local exchange carrier assets.
