Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Just got the axe after 17 years. Director showed up and bye bye. Thought I was in a secure dept. I'm pretty upset right now. Southeast area

We also just lost IR techs. We were told work was expanding due to the Direct TV work. Well surprise, all the work went to contractors and now we get told of the 91 techs here only 23 are needed and will be offered jobs in other states. woopie. Move and get hit in another state. Apparently the work for IR is also going to contractors. they will be in unmarked vans and no one will know they are doing telco work. Also the U-Verse work is going to contractors who do Direct TV also. Where is the Union?

I am not surprised, Question: when was the last time you had a technical conversation with your supervisor? ....

The "you have to learn this new thing on your own with no money or training" thing is a HUGE problem at AT&T. I don't understand how a tech company can put no investment into keeping their employees current, but AT&T does.

Told by management that I had to learn new voice systems but will not train or spend the money to train me. Told that it would be my responsibility to learn them. Nope..not spending any of my money...

The endless reviews that do nothing, say nothing, help no one, and get you no where are sickening at best. Your boss can't help you, just like his/her boss can't help them. You are not valued in this company, because they would have started actually helping folks instead of endlessly talking about it. I mean really, why should I have to invest in new skills for company that is not guaranteeing me a job? Why should I foot the bill and pay the company back, still with no real hope of a job of the future. Many of these new jobs involve skills that are in a highly competitive market worldwide. What makes anyone think that when you have 20 years with the company, make over 100k, have dependants, and are brand spanking new at front-end development, will be able to compete with foreigners who are in their 20's, learned these skills in the US anyway, have a visa, and do not need full benefits, and who will do it for cheaper?

It has become very apparent that the workforce 2020 program and others are all designed to condition us and 'brainwash' us into accepting losing your current job. The constant bombardment over changing your skills and making the pivot, obviously are not really designed for anyone to actually succeed. They want you to change your skills, but really do not teach you to do so; they just offer third-party education and some stupid 'badge' on your profile. If the company really cared about your pivot, they would start training their folks for free, instead of creating the illusion that your learning something.

It appears that most of the surplus occurred in AT&T Southeast and in Chicago. Any word on Texas and going west?

I'm so sorry. That is really, really hard news especially considering the season. Please take a few days to take care of yourself and try not to be too stressed until after Christmas. You'll get through this. AT&T is laying off smart, talented people left and right because the bottom line matters more than the skills people have.

keep in mind that announcing layoffs in the third and fourth quarters has long been a telecom tradition.I was laid off due to office closure but was glad to leave a company that no longer valued me,it will continue every quarter to rid workers, its not easy to be let go in an economy like today, no certainty or security anymore ,so sorry what happened to you there are many more in your shoes, Good Luck in movng forward.

Same happened to my husband. They are cutting from 63 techs down to 14. No one has been informed what is really happening as the work load was too big even for the 63 techs. My husband would have 18 years. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. He is willing to transfer.
