Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Get real with yourself about job loyalty. There is none, nor should you have any. Only be loyal to yourself. Take your cues from Verizon.

You are exactly correct. One of my kids is about to enter the workforce in a few weeks after graduation, the other has been in it for a few years. I have told them to NEVER give all of yourself to the company, EVER! The slackers, ass kissers and jerks are always the ones who get the promotions over the "worker bees" who are diligent, honest, productive and the real backbone of the company. They are so dedicated to their work that they often become invisible and overlooked. They are the ones who work all the overtime, usually with no acknowledgement, recognition, appreciation or compensation. The ones they seem to keep come in late, leave early, have their nights and weekends, and have a life. Actually, you have to kind of respect them that they are smart enough to not give their soul to the company. A company's responsibility is NOT to keep you employed by them. It is merely an exchange. You are monetarily compensated for services rendered. PERIOD. There is absolutely no loyalty contract on their part and neither should there be on yours. This is a business, not a committed relationship or marriage. Employees need to start thinking more like the employer, and realize that loyalty is not reciprocated or expected. Always make it a point that you can quit a company on a dime. While working there, use the company for all the skills you possibly can. Every day, be aware that what ever you do, do it to build your own resume. From time to time, job search and go on some interviews to evaluate you job market worth and figure out what you need to get under your belt to be marketable. NEVER look at your job with a company as long term. Those days are OVER! Do not be delusional about this. Look out for yourself, because the company is not ever looking out for you. They are only about Profit...Profit...Profit. Profit is the name of the game, you are merely a pawn, and that's ok, but just be aware of it and don't assume you are anything more. Your time at a company is merely a piece of your career and your life. Be sure to make time for the really important things in life that make memories, family, friends, laughter, making your dreams come true, hobbies and if possible one that can make you money one day if you find yourself unemployed. When you eventually get laid off, and almost everyone will at least once, you don't want to find yourself alone because you didn't take the time to nurture relationships and interests. You will feel worse about this that about losing the job.

As far as VERIZON goes, it is no longer a good company. Actually, it sucks. I would advise everyone, that if possible, try to find a better company to work for. Look around at the devastation they have caused to so many families , and know that you may be next one day. There are definitely better companies to work for. This is NOT the same Verizon. It is run by greedy fools who don't really know what they are doing. They make bad decisions and are even worse at executing them. Verizon is no longer a company to have pride in.

After the last layoffs in November where massive cuts took place the last remaining contractors have been released just before Christmas - Now the remaining employees will have to adjust to having the Shift Differential eliminated for 2016 - It is harder to be loyal with more workload and less money

dym is right. You've got to place your loyalties in the right context. My family is first. On the clock, I am loyal to Vz and I owe them work for $$. But once I leave, they are on my time and get very little of it if any. I know my priorities. Those who have misplaced their priorities and have sacrificed where perhaps they shouldn't have are very hurt when they get riffed. We are all grownups here. Time to act like grownups and accept that the company will only work for us if it is in their best interest. Otherwise, you are ultimately just a number. And that is ok because ultimately, it's just a job for me, not my life. So I try to keep the relationship strong by being as valuable as I can be, but at the same time I know it is not a forever relationship like the one I have with my family. No company, no coworker will ever care for you as much as your family. So don't sacrifice them or the time that takes for you to develop the close relationship with them that they and you all need and deserve. Vz will survive with or without us. If you're still employed at Vz, just keep doing your best. If you've been riffed, appreciate the time you had at Vz and make good use of the time you will have with your family. Then find something else.

Verizon is definitely the new Titantic- so happy I have been blessed to get off the ship fully intact before Captains McAdams, Shamo, and Stratton ram it into the iceberg.

@kxv yes, that's the mindset of vz managers...most are truly non-essential yet always fail to recognize or appreciate the people below them that did the work that kept them employed...they promote empty ships that rattle the loudest, the captain obvious types that ass kiss their way into the manager's good graces...and sadly for the real workers, most managers at vz aren't savvy enough to see a bullshit artist when they meet one...the wheat from the chaff will be seperated when everyone is finally rif'd...the workers will find work, the bullshitters will find shit

if you have been riffed and are hurt, angry and are lashing out at vz, via this blog, be of good cheer. There are some of us who have never had a single grain of loyalty, never drunk the company koolade and sucked, many for decades, on the vz teat. On 10/29 all of us were riffed (off payroll 12/31). Several weeks have gone by since then. Still Hurt and angry several of my colleagues asked how I felt? I said simply "Been a good run, got out of it what I wanted." Explained to them I start a new job 01/04/2016 for networking company. Reminded them how I had gone to networking classes time and time again and had got several certifications for networking. Our supervisor, also riffed, looked surprised and said he didn't think I had it in me? i laughed. Oh my, such, silly, silly little lives. They say you can't fix stupid".........I guess.

Once upon a time, when I put down my tool bag and put on my white collar shirt and became an accountant, my dad pulled me aside. He was a senior executive of on the the largest insurance companies. He told me to forget everything that I was taught about companies existing for the benefit of returning value to shareholders. He said it was a lot of nonsense. He told me that companies exist neither for the shareholders, customers nor employees. He said: "never forget that companies exist only for the top five employees, no matter what they tell you." He was right.

Unfortunately I had to learn that lesson again, when I was laid off from my second finance job, and I was shocked. I told my boss, the president of the LOB: "But I worked hard for you and was so loyal to you!". Bruce was pissed at me, I couldn't believe it. He actually yelled at me. Bruce said, that the parent company could care less about my work product or loyalty. He said, "Never, I mean never, be loyal to anyone but your family, particularly in business!"

Lesson learned. That is why I am not really upset about getting burned by Verizon, I knew that they would screw me sooner or later. It was just a matter of when. The when is now. But I learned lots, and had a great boss who is much more upset than I am about what happened. .

Moral of the story, Verizon owes you nothing, and you owe them less.

The truth! So shall it set so many free..... if they see this anyway. Question is where do you go to get that kind of loyalty these days? I guess everyone has to be an entrepreneur then.
