The Local is very sad to report that one of our members, John Hare, aged 51, passed away yesterday after suffering a severe injury while on the job. John was Cable Splicer who was known by many as a very safe technician. He had 26 years of service with Verizon. Details of the incident are unknown at this time. Specifics regarding funeral arrangements will be made available as soon as possible.

CWA will be working closely with our CWA safety staff, OSHA, VOSH, the Alexandria police, who were the first on the scene, and Verizon management as the investigation continues.

Verizon has brought in grief councelors to locations in Alexandria where John had worked most of his career. Members are reminded that councelors are available to all employees at all times via our negotiated Employee Assistance Program. The number for EAP is 1-800-441-8674. Employees will be given the latitude to take necessary time off the job as they grieve the loss of our Union brother.

Please honor John by staying focused and working safely every day and on on every job. Follow all safety policies and use all PPE. Do not risk your life for the sake of productivity. It is also very important to keep emergency contact numbers up to date and to take the time to review beneficiary designations.

No Job Is So Important, And No Service Is So Urgent That We Cannot Take The Time To Perform Our Work Safely.
