Some days I'm glad to be done with all the BS. Other days I dread the thought of having to start over. Of having to punch a clock, of having one or two weeks vacation a year, of having to wear slacks and a sport shirt. I'm 58 so I'm only working another 7 years at the most. Financially my wife and I will be OK, but like I said, some days I'm overcome with the dread. Anybody else?

33 years and yes it is a grieving process ....we (my husband and I both got RIF'ed 10/29/2015) have worked through the shock, the madness, the sadness and now realize what a freaking BLESSING this has been, no more insane stress of being afraid to make a mistake, this company has gone of the edge of insanity and I'm glad I got pushed off before I went with it!...thank you thank you thank you! We watch our granddaughter who is 10 months old now and love every minute of it, we have spent more time with her at this age then we got to spend with our own kids because we were busy working. We volunteer for Meals on Wheels, our local Kiwanis club and get to take naps! thank you thank you thank you! Happy Days!

26 years service and 50 years old and yes I have the same good and bad days. Unsuccessful finding new employment. Not sure where my skills fit in today's job market. Job market is very slow this time of year and tired of millennials telling me I am not qualified for doing a job I did for 25 years. I too try and tell myself everything happens for a reason and wish for a crystal ball for assurance that all will eventually sort itself out.
I got Riffed on 11/05 after 12 years in Verizon. Single earner in family of four. From outside I was doing everything which I missed while working like donkey for Verizon credo, however from inside uncertainties started taking over me. On 11/30 I received my first offer which is 15% better than what I was getting in Verizon. Since then I am enjoying my paid vacation.I am 50 years old and firmly believe in "Karma". Without bad days, there will be no realization of good days. Going forward my priority would be help whatever I can do those having bad days.

Vz rifs mostly older folks by throws in few younger ones that actually expressed willingness to leave. At the same time they do not rif some very old employees just to show that they are not gender biased. This goes on every 3 to 6 months for each org. This is just a nutshell. Just because we are saved for this rif does not mean we are doing good. One of the main reasons we are kept is where our age falls among our peers and when HR try to distribute the slected employees on a spectrum of age..if your age does not fit then you are saved for that time. This is a best kept secret. And they do publish this spectrum of age distribution and counts for each age for each title.
You may work another 7 years but at 58 yrs old, I doubt it will be with Verizon Wireless.or Wireline. I'm the OP, and my last day is 12/31. sorry for the confusion.
24 years here. Still hoping to find something inside, but same dread as you at times. Probably normal, but knowing that doesn't help.

It's natural to feel a sense of dread when change occurs and threatens to upset the day to day routines of our lives, but you really should be truly thankful for having had the opportunity to have been employed for so long. 25 years, some folks even longer, of gainful employment is a gift from life itself and should be cherished. There are so, so many, that have not, and will not, receive such an unparalleled sense of a hard, but productive, life of work. After college I worked for a computer company for 15 years, rising through the ranks to a senior engineer, only to be laid off when the company went bankrupt. For 2+ years I wandered in the wilderness of shit jobs, working at Best Buy & Circuit City. I got a job at Blue Cross in the IT dept and was very,very grateful, to have a second chance at being in a real job. 8 years went by and I again rose through the ranks. By the early nineties there emerged a new buzz word for those of us in IT.....outsourcing. Blue Cross "outsourced" its IT dept. and yet again, at 47 years of age, I was politely escorted over to the scrape heap of life. More years of waiding through the crap jobs, which included little IT/computer start ups, that had no damn resources whatsoever, and required the few staff to work long, long hours, use their own car to travel to customer sites, only to earn miserably low pay. Once again, at 50 years of age, perhaps out of a sense of mockery, life sent another opportunity, I got a job at GTE. Filled with the knowledge of the passing years and desperate not to ever face again years of shit jobs, I worked brutally, yes brutally, long hours and took every, every, networking class I could. Behold the angel of death. In 2000 vz came into being and within months sent its death dealers from the east coast to lay waste to GTE. Thousands throughout GTE lost their jobs. In just my building 450 people were riffed, today, 4 of us remain. Truly! Anyone lucky enough to have 25+ years of a fat, well paying job, should get on their knees, every day, & thank life for blessing them so richly.

Yep, I have good days and bad days. I miss my coworkers who were like my 2nd family. I think it's a natural process we have to go through like any loss. I was just shy of 25 years with VZW too.
