Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Surprise Surprise

Sprint’s chairman said Wednesday in Japan what AT&T and its CEO has been unwilling to say in Overland Park or Dallas: Layoffs looming at the No. 2 & 4 wireless carriers will number in the thousands.

The “thousands” comment came from Masayoshi Son, Sprint chairman and head of Tokyo-based SoftBank Group Corp., which owns more than 80 percent of Sprint. He had just given SoftBank shareholders an update on his big American investment.

“Sprint is now in the position to increase the pace of user acquisition while cutting costs,” Son told reporters in Tokyo, according to Bloomberg News. “We will also cut staff. The cuts will be in the thousands.”

Asked Tuesday in Overland Park, Sprint chief executive Marcelo Claure had declined to put a number on the size of job cuts expected as part of a plan to slash spending by $2 billion a year. Claure told The Star he did not have a number in mind.

An AT&T spokesman said the statement spoke for itself and reiterated Claure’s comments. The businesses do not need many people in the US to manage the network. Work will be mostly outsourced and work will be done via the hiring of contractors. As a company we save much overhead cost associated with employees, medical, vacations, training etc.

“We at AT&T are working through the process to identify areas across the company where we can reduce costs also. That will include job reductions. We will share more details when we can,” the spokesman said in an email.

ATO is the freaking worst. It's just as bad on the corporate side as @EIemNDG-6qkh suggests. The only trait they want in an employee is to do whatever they say with no feedback. Don't ever ask for help because you'll be mocked and/or disciplined on team calls. Don't ever have ideas of your own or else you'll be told your replaceable. They expect you to work 60 hour weeks and don't dare have any kind of plans ever. If you're not on your computer within 10 minutes of getting an e-mail at night or on the weekends, you're yelled at and told you're replaceable.

ATO Management is horrible. It seems as only the most fraudulent managers are praised and promoted. Regional management plays favorites. If you voice your opinion and is not liked by management they will find a way to x you out. Actually helping the account teams is not even an option anymore like when I first started. If it doesn't make it to ICB, its not happening. We are told daily that we are replaceable if we don't perform. Many don't know exactly what their role is, Offload Managers gossip about direct reports to other reps. Bonus goes down annually but more work is given so now we work 3 times as hard for the same money. Have to add additional features to customers accounts in order to maintain decent numbers. Quotas are to high so reps are forced to do things to customers that are not moral. To sum it up the retail sales department is HORRIBLE!!!, if you can jump ship, don't thin twice!

NO WORK LIFE BALANCE. They say family first. But let's be real it's impossible to have kids or any type of film time. As far as women don't expect to move up especially you are part of the cool kids club ( the male managers) or the chant forces them to hire a women manager, which are useless most times

It doesn't matter if you're a "real contributor." Decisions like this are made by looking at how much money can be saved by laying off entire departments. Your personal work history and contributions are irrelevant.

I hope people are getting ready and have a plan, if you are not a real contributor, the company already know that,,,is just matter of time, don't wait 2 long, no one wants to hire a 55+ year old employee, specially if you worked for the same company for 20+ years

AT&T will purchase one "easy button" from Staples and every call or request for service will be handed by the CEO with one push. Zero employees and he can make 3 or 4 billion in salary as he deserves or so he thinks
