One reason for title changes is to substantiate RIFs. Their argument will be RIFed titles or roles are no longer needed.

The new pecking order is being established. If you remember back about a year several of the consultants (demoralizing title) had been elevated to senior or consultant IV. This was the beginning, in my opinion, of the current cuts. The core group was established by managers and directors for cuts allowing a spreadsheet sort to target. The unfortunate aspect of this is the nepotism and favoritism that happened and is now not associated with the RIF's. I saw the lowest contributors elevated during this period. They were the regurgitaters that forward information as if it were their own thoughts and in BS'ed their way through. I called this back then and see the future having the next cuts for consultants coming from the III pool. The associate consultants are safe if they don't stay stagnant and agree to BS their way to the top. This realignment is intended to expedite future cuts following the current that had saturated their pay band or a problem employee. Heaven help the Asperger individual that worked and didn't/couldn't buy into the smoozing desired by upper management. It is disgusting to see what has been transpiring and know it was well conceived to cover the company.

I am in the Corporate Technology organization. My VP had a call on Friday and this was a topic that came up. Many of the band 6 Senior Consultant individual contributors are being changed to Manager and band 6 Managers that have direct reports are being changed to Senior Manager. The irony of the change is she said it was to help attract talent at the band 6 individual contributor level. There is apparently a negative image/opinion of the Senior Consultant title. According to her we are making the change to better align with the industry. If you look at people in the Corporate Communications and Marketing organization it looks like the changes have already started to roll out.
