Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Wireless needs to consider a union

Then maybe you'll stand a chance against the handful of Verizon executives that pull down almost 50 million dollars a year in compensation while laying off dedicated workers. Media and politicians that are owned outright by billionaires have successfully convinced the masses that unions are bad, but that organizations that lobby for businesses (ALEC or Chamber of Commerce) are A-OK. How's that been working out for all of us? One more thing, I don't believe for a second that these comments by (supposed) wireline employees, gloating over wireless layoffs, are legit. This is called the divide and conquer routine, where somebody wants to redirect your anger to the wrong party. Who just laid you off, your middle class neighbor who happens to be a union member, or an executive with a 7 figure salary?

When I worked at VZW (wireless) back from 1996-2008, the manager, a foreigner, was extremely anti-union.

Know that: Because we are foreign, we must be anti-union.

This is EXACTLY why you need to vote for Donald Trump because you have lost your country to what drives it.

You need a REALLY SMART person running it who can't be bought out.

Time to make America great again.

The idea. The idea that the worker should have an equal say as "the manager" - is worthy. We all want to have "our say"; even if it its for 10 minutes of our 15 minutes of fame. The fact that the board of directors and shareholders are the only ones that are actually represented in our press (or what passes as press), is pathetic.

How many of YOU have been listened to?

How many of YOU have had your suggestions considered?

Did someone say your input was valued? Really? Did you actually think that it was?

We, as workers; need to have a common voice.

We need to have BOTH collective and individual, benefits of belonging.

Rather than the C-level executives that have +340X times the wages of us!!!

I made the first "parasite" comment, not the second. I worked around enough unions and am related to enough current union members to know that while there are some benefits, the real winners are usually the ones in control of the union...the real parasites. I believe in unions in many cases...why should a company be able to hold you hostage to your specialized training and use it against you. But many union members don't deserve to be part of a union where it becomes just a for-profit club that subsidizes a lot of unqualified people at the expense of good workers all the while feeding the bosses. I've been there...I've seen the good and bad of unions. I've seen the good and bad of management. You get screwed on either side. You know, I am in charge of me. I don't need some fatcat to take my money and treat me like the lowest common denominator. And I don't expect that high performance alone will guarantee that I don't get laid off. But at least I have a shot at excellence that way. And if I get laid off, I get another job. I worked hard to get the qualifications to be able to do so.

So quit the hyperbole about the free market, childishness, and lack of intellect. I know very well what the world and market are like. No one is saying to be naïve. I've been laid off before and know what that is like. But it's not the end of the world. If you always live your life in such a way that you are prepared for such things, you've got a pretty good shot at surviving quite well without having to panic. But I guess if you've not taken steps to improved yourself via education or other training or if you tend not to plan ahead or if can't seem to live within your means and could scarce well weather a temporary storm in life, then I guess you have no choice but to go after the union teet.

To the gentleman, or gentlelady, that keeps referring to the union as parasites, the one who deep down knows full well that the union is actually the host in this relationship, and who's labor and accomplishment is being fed off by others for financial gain, take your blinders off. You are intellectually lost. Like so many conservatives, you stick to a childlike literalist black and white worldview where the free market is viewed as a supernatural Godlike entity that can do no wrong. When provided evidence to the contrary, you will invariably resort to a semantical no true Scotsman defense that will convince no-one. Don't doom yourself to an intellectually and socially stunted life. Let go of your superstitious beliefs in an all-powerful, all-good free market. Let the healing begin.

Wireline has employees with 30+ years. Some even 50+. Layoffs are done by seniority so of you dedicated wireless with that much time that get thanked for your dedication and shown the door don't look for pity. You have yourselves to thank and Lowell.

Sure. Instead of subsidizing management we'd get to subsidize a bunch of union parasites. No thanks.

Exactly right. There is a reason why they fight so hard to keep wireless from unionizing.

At bare minimum you guys would have had a contraxt that spells out how layoffs would take place and what provisions would need to

Be followed. A legal contract provides you with more then you have now. Heck

All the execs have contracts with vz for themselves! Think about that
