I was a part of a large group of AT&T Contractors that got laid off in July 2014. AT&T does not treat contractors fairly and they are always the first to go. If you have an opportunity to get a full time position with AT&T jump on it, things will be much easier for you, you may make less money (Typically you'll make 40% less) but your job security will be much higher and you may be able to stay with AT&T longer (if you would like). I liked my group, it was all good while lasted but as I said, I had to go as they decided to cut all contractors in my group. Based on what I hear from my friends who work for Verizon Wire, things are pretty much the same there, there is a ton of layoffs there so I would say nobody is safe right now

Your not understanding the logic. Contractors do not get medical, 401k or other perks employees do. Now take a deep breath and guess which ATT will dump first. In some specific areas they may dump a contractor but in most cases the company dumps employees.
To the contractors who got laid off. You were only there to help the company layoff employees first. They were using you from day one. You are complaining about your job loss when you took part in TAKING someone else's. You even went into Union shops and did it there. AT&T showed you the same love that they showed people with 20, 25, 30 + years. Do you think what you did was nice and that you should have been treated better? Really! That company answers to Wall Street and the ceo's take, take, and take some more and can't get enough. Armstrong should have been put in jail, he was at the helm when he caused that company to go into free fall. I think his motto was (several) - how much can I take - how many bad deals can I make - how low can I drive this stock for a takeover - how badly can I treat the employees who made the the company great (before I got here) - customer service, what's that?
Everyone here is correct in the assumption that there is no secure job in telecom companies anymore. ATT is getting too big for their britches with the direct tv acquisition. All they care about is the mighty dollar... No loyalties to employees withstanding.
I was let go from AT&T with all my coworker Cricket wireless technicians that were promised twe would be kept on boardin the Ohio valley market. Not to be however. Their loss. We will switch over to Verizon who has superior net ops.
No one is really safe within AT&T. There are a lot of layoffs on both sides employees as well as contractors. We as employees are often asked to do a job of 5 people and I fear it will get worse next year when more TechM and employees will be let go. A better move would be to get rid of most VP. Imagine how much this would save the company.
Sorry, but as a contractor you should be 1st to go not the regular employees....no job is secure anymore,those 20 40 yrs careers are gone.
