Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Landline + Unions = Layoffs for wireless :(

Landlines are going the way of the telegraph, and their management is trying to drag down wireless with it. Don't get me started on their unions. We're in the midst of layoffs, and you goof balls are going on strike. If you landline guys lose your job, you have no one to blame but yourself. Maybe you can take up typewriter repair, it's right up your alley. The worst day in wireless's life was when landline took over.

I'll bet that 99.9% of the public think their cell phone is like a walkie talkie, sending the call directly from one phone to another. In reality your call goes to a cell tower, then to a central office. Depending on where the terminating phone is, this traffic might then go through a dozen other offices before it gets to it's destination. From the cell tower to all these central offices the call is not wireless, but travelling over a backbone network which is probably a mix of fiber and copper. This network is built/maintained by the wireline/union Verizon worker, but the disingenuous Verizon executives don't want the general public aware of this. The public's lack of knowledge enables the execs to tell them that the wireline side of the house loses money. UNTRUE! Don't fall for the BS.

Please keep in mind that wireline financed all of the fiber to the tower expenses, thus this gave wireless a larger profit than it really had. Pray that that incorrect financial transaction does not come back to bite VZ in the rear. If they had spun off wireline we would have shown a profit and probably a large profit, as all these accounting games would not have been played.

What actual job skills do these wireless desk jockeys have that a 15 year old Indian kid doesn't have? Stop talking down wireline employees like they're dumb uneducated useless people. They work hard and have many skills and talents. I don't think a lot of people could successfully do their jobs. Obviously they're needed when VZ forces them 12 hour days 7 days a week non-stop throughout the year. Fios is busy, popular, and everyone wants it.

Wireline's FIOS won't go far if they have to dig to put in their optic cables. As an example, our big condo development won't allow them to dig, so they are missing out on the 'mass' numbers already even if their service outweighs AT&T and COX. And how good are they in trying to put their foot on the door of new condo development being constructed? Looks like each township still has their own cable monopoly - believe it or not.

The wireline people may not be getting updates on earnings and profits from the overall boss, but the wireless team does. And we see profits being raked in by the wireless business but the wireline's is minimal, if there is any. I think it's too much of a coincidence that our wireless team bonuses and profit-sharing were great until they started merging the two - is it due to the cost of the merge or was it to raise the wireline bonus and benefits?

You people need to stop separating Wireless and Wireline. The Wireless network DOES NOT EXIST without the wireline backbone. You cannot sell one off and have the other. Enterprise and CMB are actually still quite profitable just not as profitable as they used to be. You clearly are misreading our quarterly earning reports.

Which side of the house is making money? Which side is losing it? ----Both sides are making money, but both sides have declining profit margins. It just happens that the "Wireline" services have been bleeding money for longer. VZ knows that Wireless is not a long-term cash cow anymore. Too much competition from other carriers driving the price down. Not to mention that you have to deal with FCC regulations as well as a customer base that feels that we already overprice our service. This gives little room for us to be able to improve these margins.

This is why you see VZ attempting to invest in Go90, AOL, and other services that provide content over the web. This generates a new revenue stream by selling advertisement space. Don't even get me started on my opinion on Go90. In my opinion it will be buried next to our streaming service. You just don't attempt to compete with Netflix and you especially don't attempt to compete with Google (Youtube). Especially considering the public opinion of our company is overall very negative. I do not think we would survive as a company if we did not exist in an Oligopoly of a service.

I wish if we can somehow bridge this rift between Wireless and Wire, seriously. It tears us all apart. It's one company.

Enterprise and Fios are in the Black. Copper is too after counting in all fees . The problem now is that profits in wireless are getting flat. There is a lot of money to be made in Fios ,why are else is google and muni fiber expanding. It's just the stockholders want short term profits

Verizon was primarily a wireline company and wireless was a privately held asset and it's revenues were minor until fee years ago. The biggest mistake VZ did was buying the stake from vodaphone. Now wireless is no.longer a lucrative business. We have a ton of debt probably world's largest. Wireline never had this much debt. All this debt is because of wireless. Wireless revenues and profits are slimming down and it is getting difficult to service the debt. Wireline is like your paid off car, for which you don't pay installments. It is the wireless that is dragging everyone down...

I'll type slowly so you landline guys can understand it. Again: Which side of the house is making money? Which side is losing it?

You obviously don't have a clue what you are talking about.

There would be NO wireless network without the wired line.

You wireless people are all the same...you don't understand the full picture of what "wired" service Verizon has. Do you think that the big banks, stock exchange trading, Silicon Valley tech, etc (and in general, most of the huge companies in America) run on wireless? LOL. That's VZ Enterprise, and it's wired. Pricing in this industry is so messed up. Wireless gouges residential consumers that have no money, while VZ Enterprise practically gives away 10 and 100 Gig Ethernet circuits to companies with hordes of cash on hand. That's messed up. I always said wireless would see margin pressure so much more quickly than wired service, and that's what we are in the early stages of.
