Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

AT&T is preparing us to lose our jobs!

It has become very apparent that the workforce 2020 program and others are all designed to condition us and 'brainwash' us into accepting losing your current job. The constant bombardment over changing your skills and making the pivot, obviously are not really designed for anyone to actually succeed. They want you to change your skills, but really do not teach you to do so; they just offer third-party education and some stupid 'badge' on your profile. If the company really cared about your pivot, they would start training their folks for free, instead of creating the illusion that your learning something.

They are letting you know, though, that you have to be aware that a change is coming, and more than likely you will not fit in. You make too much money, you were born in the US, your male, etc. etc. They have designed these programs to make you feel like you are actually part of it; huh...far from it! It's just easier for them to not make everyone panic, like a frog in hot water.

The endless reviews that do nothing, say nothing, help no one, and get you no where are sickening at best. Your boss can't help you, just like his/her boss can't help them. You are not valued in this company, because they would have started actually helping folks instead of endlessly talking about it. I mean really, why should I have to invest in new skills for company that is not guaranteeing me a job? Why should I foot the bill and pay the company back, still with no real hope of a job of the future. Many of these new jobs involve skills that are in a highly competitive market worldwide. What makes anyone think that when you have 20 years with the company, make over 100k, have dependants, and are brand spanking new at front-end development, will be able to compete with foreigners who are in their 20's, learned these skills in the US anyway, have a visa, and do not need full benefits, and who will do it for cheaper?

I get it, really I do! They want me to analyze my skills and strengths for the future, I can do that, but I may not be learning the skills they say they need; I get it. I have strengths and skills that do work and can still get me work. They want me to market myself, well...I can do that too, it just may be with other companies that actually plan on staying in the US.

Come on ATT, quite trying to fool us all, and get to the point that we need to find another job away from ATT; just say it.

ATT has given us a time line, it may or may not be enough time to locate another job, but it will have to do. Oh yes, I'm enhancing my skills and marketing myself, just like they want, getting ready for the pivot; too another job that is!!

  1. Job elimination. One of the most common excuses used to get rid of older employees is “job elimination.” However, that may just be an excuse for what is really age discrimination. If the company is not really eliminating the job, just changing the title and putting someone younger is your former position, you may have an age discrimination claim.

  2. Layoff. The company is supposed to attach to a layoff notice a list of other employees included and excluded from the layoff, along with their ages. Employers can be sneaky about the way they put together these reports. Some will show only select departments or specific job titles, which don’t give the whole picture. More often, they’ll include a few under-40 employees to make the bloodletting look less like age discrimination.

Still, if you are selected for layoff and younger, less-qualified employees at your level are not, you might have an age discrimination claim. If you’re part of a one-person or small “layoff” and you can show that younger people are not being included, then you may be able to prove age discrimination.

11 friends of mine have lost their jobs this year under the pretense of a reorganization or been told that their positions were being eliminated, after they were gone, management replaced them with people from another units, no experience ( incredible) , they were extremely accomplished professionals in their 50s. Is this the latest way companies are getting rid of older workers?

Even if you have the skills they're looking for, they'll still chase you out. I'm in my 20s with an engineering degree and I'm an incredible programmer and I got surplussed. I found a new job paying over twice as much in one day. Colleagues on the team I was on were young, expert programmers and most of them have quit, too. The company just wants less employees...that's all. Start looking for a new job now before they cut you, too.

I do think most will be let go over the next five years. Encouraging you to take classes and gain new skills is preparing you for a job search outside of AT&T. It is no way securing your position with AT&T...and how can you possibly fault AT&T when they surplus you?...they were looking out for you...it is your fault you didn't gain the skills they were looking for...lol
