Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Surplused

My experience is that who gets surplused is high up in the chain of command. In the past when I was surplused even my level 3 manager was surplused. I specifically asked him how the decisions were made as to who goes and who stays. He said he didn't know and he had no input on the decision. As for the originator of this discussion. Drop all your work and let it all slide. If your last day is Friday then enjoy it and skip the work load. Nothing they can do to you. As for me....I volunteer for everything. Me me me, I'll take it is part of my plan to survive until Rule Of 75. I also plan to hit the training hard. And.............Pray since it may turn out that none of that will matter and I may get surplused anyway.

Depending upon your AT&T "COMPANY" and how far you have to go to hit the MODIFIED rule of 75' you may find that the only retiree benefit is a phone discount. the pre 65 health benefits are expensive and post 65' you may or more likely may not qualify for att subsidized medical insurance supplements thru AON.

AT&T will find a way to lose you prior to that. They age discriminate, but hide it well, expect to be let go within two years of your rule of 75.

143048, you make good points, but why is AT&T willing to lay off young, affordable programmers? Why is AT&T willing to force young, affordable programmers into data entry jobs until they quit? They won't be able to keep and use programmers until they can lose the dead weight management desperate to cling onto the old ways.

ATT By now, it is a weary American ritual--the announcement of the layoffs, the actual discharges, the handoff of veteran employees to those worker recycling centers known as "outplacement services." The biggest of the job cuts without headlines

These days, restructuring rather than simple downsizing drives most of the job loss. Corporations are not so much reducing their size as trading in their people--out with the old and in with the new.

Workers with today's skills are brought in to replace those with yesterday's. Though, for the sake of the bottom line, corporations are also sometimes willing to exchange better and older for younger and cheaper.

Even as highly profitable AT&T, saves more money shipping jobs overseas, After all, no company could transform a now-unneeded sales clerk into a newly-necessary computer programmer, the 2020 initiative will be another failed project, and well constructed plan to get rid of american jobs, for profits.

For this round of surplus, HR made the decision with a few exceptions. But why in God's name would you recommend people just leave work undone. Telecom is a cannabalizing industry, that means that its all a very small world. I work with people with various degrees of separation over the years from company to company. I would advise NEVER to just leave work. As I type this, people are being asked back as consultants for 4Q 2014 and 1Q 2015 for various special projects, esp. those where experience is needed on a certain system.
