Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

On the H1B Question

So our H1B engineers were brought in here with the assumption that there is a lack of US based engineers. Right? Now, when Verizon starts to layoff, it means they have extra resources that it is needed. So the original reason that they came, doesn't exist anymore. So, logically they should be the first to let go (without any insult or disrespect) However, I don't think it is the case. Am I missing something or does this work differently?

When these companies layoff they always choose a citizen or perm resident. If an H1b is a regular employee, then laying them off creates problems with future H1b hiring- the US immigration dept will not be happy. If H1b is a contractor, then his cost is not expense but it will be capital spend. Also contractors (SOW) are not counted as a headcount. So no benifit for the company to cut a contractor.

Employee cost is treated as expense while contractor cost is capital.

For every H1B there are min. 5 family members that come along with H4s also getting work permits. Their parents get social security benefits and free medical care at our best hospitals thanks to medicare and medicaid while we pay dearly taxes and premiums and out of pocket expenses for our medicals. The idea that you can get social security without having paid a penny into it alone is sick. You hire Indian H1Bs en mass and your company is in big trouble, see us, Cisco, Intel, etc. Big profits go to Infosys, TCS, Accenture, HCL and others while the citizens bear the cost of them being here.
