Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

AT&T pays very little

I was a programmer and lead engineer on national projects. It was Hell. AT&T pays very little and if you're brought in through a different company, they will take all the perks away and keep you at the low salary. I would work 7 days a week every week and usually 10+ hour days. I have an engineering degree from one of the top engineering schools in the country and I was constantly yelled at by my supervisor - someone with a GED as their highest degree and no technical skills to speak of. Most of my colleagues were very angry and bitter and I was constantly pulling knives out of my back. It is impossible to get any real training and good luck getting tuition reimbursement approved. I was so beat down, I thought I was worthless and I believed my management when they would tell me no one else would ever want me. Getting laid off was a blessing because I found a new job paying twice as much in a matter of hours with co-workers who actually respect me. DO NOT work at AT&T unless you want to drown in self-hate.

AT&T pays really poorly...less than half of market value. It pays amazingly well if you don't have a college degree and you're hired into one of the main HQ offices, but otherwise, the pay is terrible. Our group had degreed engineers from very well respected schools making less than half of the high school diploma and GED people working in the main office HQ.
