Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Advice to suplused Management

I am a senior manager in mid-markets, and for some of the current cut employees, I do offer some input; The question is if someone with low tenure should stay at all, when layoffs will continue in the next 4 years. is very hard to keep up with business needs when a" dark cloud "is on people's heads every time surplus announcements are made official, which will be often. No position is secured anymore, engineering and IT operations are been cut and sent overseas, customer service units, cuts will continue And sent overseas as well, without a workforce, the management chain can exist. Therefore someone with low tenure will be best serve by finding a job in a company with a better outlook in the long run, and in which you are valued by your experience and achievements. For some one with 20 years of employment, will be very difficult to keep your job for the most part, I would recommend to be very flexible and unpaid relocation is on the plate if you want to remain with the company, unfortunately ATT knows how to get rid of old employees very well. I typically don't offer advise in this regard, but I feel compelled for the way ATT is treating employees for profits. Everyone one see's through the false statements about caring for the customer's and employee's, ATT can't spot talent even if it's on top of the board. I wish success in you career, is always best to prepare for the long term, I want you to see your self, as if you where playing a game of chess. Good luck!!

I entirely agree with OP. I was an engineer on a data entry team. I have multiple degrees and years of programming experience. I am everything AT&T says they want in 2020, but I was surplussed because I didn't agree with my supervisor that manual data entry was better than programming. I've been looking outside AT&T and getting offers for over twice what I made at AT&T with much better working conditions. If you have 20+ years at AT&T, by all means, you should stay. But, if you have the skills AT&T is saying they want in 2020, find somewhere else to work that will value you.

I think you missed the OP's point. He was saying if you're low in tenure you should consider looking elsewhere. You haven't built up much to walk away from and you have plenty of potential to find a better situation than exists here. He wasn't saying people of lower tenure are lesser employees.

Grammer comment is so true. My boss cant write well. He probably makes at least $150k a year, maybe much more than that. "Suplused" isn't a word. If you are a mid level manager and are not able to write with basic spelling and grammer i hope you are also "suplused".

One trick I've seen used effectively is ability to take credit for other people's work and success. If you do this and can pull it off you have a better chance of survival. There is so much chaos and confusion its hard to validate half truths and misdirection. Senior managers with ability to call out bullshit will be in demand.

Some bad grammar is the result of stress and workload, but there is always time to mke sure spelling and basic sentence struture is correct. Speaking from the vantage of an employee who works at att as a result of a merger. Old school telco folks are mainly dead weight. The ones who cant write need to go.

Great comment, unfortunately for hard working folks, is all true, in my opinion.

RE:someone with low tenure will be best serve by finding a job in a company with a better outlook in the long run, and in which you are valued by your experience and achievements.... I thought it was based on the skill set and what you have to offer (experience and value) regardless how many years you have with att is how you maintain a position in mgmt. not tenure. ALSO WHY DOES A PERSON WHO IS SENIOR MGMT HAVE SUCH BAD GRAMMAR??? I had a boss who had the grammar of a 5th grade drop out. and it had a big impact in the dept being runned so poorly ,it was very annoying because of her lack of education and lack of skills .att has not been valuing its employees since ma bell passed away and the step child sbc took over !!
