Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Massive reorg and layoffs even in growing sectors

I work in a growth area within netops (lets just say u v e r s e, to stay anonymous I cant be more specific), last year we brought on multiple managers as the business was and still is growing. At the beginning of 2015 we were froze out of backfilling our almost 10 open positions for bargained employees. We were recently on the reorg call stating our work group was affected on the management side. They say managers have to have 15 to 1 employee count for span of control. Just last year they hired TWO new managers (one off the street). We are likely going to lose 2 or 3 managers from our team as thats the only way we will hit the span of control numbers. I largely trust my AM and he hasnt been told anything at all (they didnt even tell him about the phone call notifying his managers of the surplus).

What was worse, there were two individuals on our "call" that had just been promoted to managers a month prior from another team. Where is the logic and transparency? Everyone has faith the company will find them another position but this is grossly unlikely any layoff I have seen in my ten years with the company. Anything affecting groups prior have been individual teams and not company wide. Not to mention they told us a month before they were officially going to announce who is selected. What good does that do other than make individual worry and cause undo stress. This is the first time in a long while I have ever considered jumping ship simply because I helped build my team from nothing.

You Know as much as I do. Funny thing is how (like always) Contractors are not being affected and we have a ton of them.

Normally I feel very secure in what I do but this does feel very different and I have the feeling that the people makeing the decisions really don't know anything about the people that are considering and are looking at paper only, since the direct line managers aren't even involved. In any case if I am laidoff (won't call it surplused) I do not plan on sticking around, I'll likely resign on the spot , I have no intention on staying to train my replacements.

Aging companies often make big acquisitions when facing a decline in their own businesses. In the best case scenario, the acquired company is snapped up at a discount and revives overall growth for years to come. More commonly, the big buyouts are merely attempts to buy time. Integrating incompatible operations for a couple of years, and providing excuses for large-scale layoffs. The smoke and mirrors works only for so long. Then another expensive deal is required to keep the ruse going.

ATT is already integrating single dispatch for Uverse and Direct TV.They are investing a lot of money, for not having approval yet. Unless its already approved and this just another charade.

What will happen if the FCC does not approve the DirecTv at&t merger? More layoffs?

ATT will continue to spread the rah rah propaganda on one hand and then secretly spread fear amongst us managers to control us. ATT has no intention of keeping any of us. Jumping ship would be a great idea, but we still need a job.
