Today we learned that nearly 100 employees in IT will lose their jobs so that offshore contracting companies can take over. This seems wrong on so many levels. Yet AT&T is one of the companies that constantly lobbies government for more H1Bs saying that they cannot find technical talent.
They make their employees "managers" so that they can backfill union jobs when unions go on strike, then reward them by replacing them with Indian contractors.
The "american" has long been removed from at&ts name. The initials stand for nothing now. When you have a ceo telling you to think like an immigrant while replacing everyone with foreign workers, what do you expect? The truth is that there will always be someone younger and hungrier than you, so you will be replaced. That person will then get replaced by the next younger and hungrier. So much for a collaborative environment that rewards innovation.
It is getting ridiculous. It's called "AMERICAN" Telephone & Telegraph for a reason. The FCC and the US Federal government in general should focus more on domestic job growth and skills training. Instead of reaching out for the phantom carrot that AT&T is waving in front of the FCC that "promises" $5 internet to the poor, the government should require job protection and training requirements. The irony is that some folks that will be laid off soon may end up qualifying for that low income connection. I'm all for innovation and creating efficiencies but ruining people's livelihood is corporate malfeasance. The FCC should ignore the false promises that AT&T has offered to grease the squeaky wheel to gain approval to buy DirectTV. The government should set their own requirements that secure good jobs for good for good people that provide proper training. Dallas is playing too fast and loose with an iconic American institution that grew up in New York and San Francisco. Just look at AT&T's Facebook page. It's nothing but complaint after customer complaint. This is not a time to let people go. Managers can be reshuffled into new roles. Somebody's going to have to coach and develop all the kids they are hiring now, many of whom are miserable btw. Our leadership has failed us. I hope the need outlets pick up on this as it is very apparent that they are trying to sneak these job cuts under the media radar.
You think the government has nothing to do with this? Why ask your congressmen for help? Corporatism+Government= Fascism. Wake up.
Whats the solution? I get tired of watching this happen. I wrote my congressmen but they support raising the h1b cap so this can continue. Neither party wants to stand with employees.
Is American business doomed to a slow decline?
It has nothing to do with the economy but all to do with profit margins. There are no moral and ethical considerations any more. Employees of integrity are no longer valued and instead laid off by national boards who have no knowledge of an employee 's ethics or value to the company. Instead foreign workers are courted and brought into the country for jobs. Big business is strangling America without conscience. Corporate America inherited companies built on integrity and product safety but they are taking that heritage and throwing it to countries ruled by drug cartels or Communism who in turn sell back to the U.S. Unsafe, even deadly products. This is "progress!"
